Monzen-yu in Kyoto: Morning Bath, Midday Closure and Late-Night Hours

Monzen-yu opens 9 a.m.–noon, closes until 3 p.m., then stays open until 2 a.m. Sundays run continuously; Thursdays are closed.

Monzen-yu has a schedule that can save a morning in northern Kyoto—or leave you waiting outside. Monday through Wednesday and Friday, it opens 9 a.m.–noon, closes from noon to 3 p.m., then runs until 2 a.m. Saturday is an afternoon-and-evening visit; Sundays run 9 a.m.–2 a.m. without the midday break. It is closed on Thursdays.

The bathhouse is on the east side of Daitoku-ji, along the Shin-Ōmiya shopping street. It works best when you are already visiting Daitoku-ji, Imamiya Shrine or the nearby neighborhood. The bath itself is a standard-price public sento with an outdoor bath and sauna; it is not a large spa or a natural hot spring.

Check the clock before crossing Kita Ward

The association lists the schedule this way:

DayMorningMiddayAfternoon and evening
Monday–Wednesday and Friday9 a.m.–noonClosed noon–3 p.m.3 p.m.–2 a.m.
SaturdayClosed before 3 p.m.Closed before 3 p.m.3 p.m.–2 a.m.
Sunday9 a.m.–2 a.m.Open continuouslyOpen continuously
ThursdayClosedClosedClosed

The noon-to-3 p.m. gap is the main planning constraint. If you arrive at 12:30 on a weekday, the bath will not reopen for two and a half hours. Use that time for lunch or the Daitoku-ji grounds rather than making a detour and then waiting. There is no stated last-entry time, so do not plan to arrive close to 2 a.m.

Adult admission is ¥550 under Kyoto’s public-bath tariff. Monzen-yu offers towel rental and sales, plus soap and shampoo for sale, but does not list item prices. Bring your own supplies if you want to avoid extra charges.

Bath facilities and what is not confirmed

The association lists a main bath, shallow and deep pools, jet and electric baths, a cold bath, medicinal bath, outdoor bath and sauna. That is enough for a varied sento visit without the scale of a super-sento. Bring your own towel if you prefer not to check the rental options at reception.

No natural spring, source temperature or water-treatment method is identified for Monzen-yu. An outdoor bath and medicinal bath do not establish that the water is a natural onsen. If a documented spring matters, compare the facilities in the Kyoto sento and natural-onsen guide before travelling.

Pair it with Daitoku-ji or a north Kyoto stay

Monzen-yu is located at 29 Murasakino Monzen-chō, Kita Ward. The association lists 13 parking spaces. For public transport, check the bus route and stop for your date; the short local walk is more useful if your itinerary already includes Daitoku-ji and the Shin-Ōmiya shopping street than if you are travelling across the city only for a ¥550 bath.

The bathhouse’s hours also fill a specific gap in Kyoto’s morning choices. It starts later than the early-opening options near Kyoto Station, but 9 a.m. works well for a morning around Daitoku-ji. On Sundays, continuous hours mean you can bathe after lunch or return in the evening without worrying about the weekday break. The Kyoto morning-sento guide compares other openings by day, while the late-night guide helps if the closing time is the priority.

Tattoo policy: Unconfirmed; call before visiting if entry depends on it. Monzen-yu is not a lodging facility, so its 2 a.m. closing time does not include overnight rest.
