Niji no Yu Nishiyamato vs Otonohana Onsen: Which One Is Easier Without a Car?

Checked: September 27, 2026

Otonohana is close to a station and centres on its large outdoor bath. Niji no Yu takes an extra bus leg, but offers more to do on site and stays open until midnight.

Prices and access were checked against the facilities’ published information on September 27, 2026. Otonohana’s Wednesday price has operating-day exceptions; confirm the current notice before relying on it.

The station walk is Otonohana’s clearest advantage

Otonohana is roughly 300 metres west of Higashiyama Station on the Kintetsu Ikoma Line. From the platform, the final leg is a short walk; you do not need to add a bus timetable to the plan. It suits a day around Ikoma or anyone who would rather avoid a connection after the train.

Niji no Yu is reachable by public transport, but it takes more coordination. From Ōji or Shin-Ōji, the operator lists a Nara Kotsu bus ride of about 20 minutes to Kamimaki Town Cultural Center, followed by a three-minute walk. From Gojō, the bus ride is about 15 minutes, then the same short walk. Check the return bus before settling in for a late visit.

A Wednesday can change the fare comparison

Adult admissionStandard rateOffer
Niji no Yu, weekdays / weekends and public holidays¥900 / ¥950—
Otonohana¥1,000¥500 Wednesday offer listed on visitor page

Special operating days and holidays can affect the discount, so treat the Wednesday offer as date-specific rather than a guaranteed price for every Wednesday.

The Otonohana restaurant is generally closed on Wednesdays, which is worth knowing if you hoped to have dinner there. Niji no Yu’s SASAYURI KITCHEN serves until 11 p.m. and takes its last order at 10 p.m.; the bath itself stays open later. The restaurant is also open to diners who are not using the bath, according to its latest notice.

A simpler outdoor soak, or a longer spa visit?

Otonohana’s draw is the bath space, especially the large outdoor area. Nara Prefecture describes the men’s outdoor bath as among the largest in the prefecture and notes a cypress bath on the women’s side. The prefecture identifies a deep natural spring, but the current facility pages do not give a comparable full spring analysis or establish that the baths are supplied untreated. The often-quoted 1,850 metres refers to the depth of the source, not the bath’s temperature.

Niji no Yu has a more varied circuit: an outdoor Shigaraki-ware tub explicitly described as free-flow spring water, a separate indoor natural-spring bath, carbonated and current baths, a waterfall-view bath and cold baths. Its three sauna types are a radon sauna, a barrel sauna and a mist sauna in the women’s bath. The operator does not label every pool as free-flow, so the claim belongs to the designated tub only.

The choice is less about which facility is objectively better. If you want a short, easy-to-reach soak centred on an outdoor bath, Otonohana fits. If you will use the saunas and rest areas, or want to eat and stay later, Niji no Yu gives you more ways to fill the afternoon or evening.

Towels, amenities and tattoos

Niji no Yu provides shampoo, conditioner and body wash. A face towel costs ¥200 and bath-towel rental is ¥200, so an adult arriving without towels can budget ¥1,300 on a weekday or ¥1,350 on a weekend or public holiday before food.

Otonohana’s visitor information tells guests to bring their bathing items. If you need to buy or rent towels or toiletries there, check with the facility first; the published pages do not give a clear, current day-use price list for those items.

Niji no Yu’s rules refuse entry to guests with tattoos, including fake tattoos and tattoo stickers. Otonohana’s pages reviewed here do not state a comparably clear tattoo policy, so contact the operator if this affects your choice. Do not assume the other facility’s rule applies.

Which one should you choose?

Choose Otonohana if the short walk from Higashiyama Station matters most, you want a large outdoor bath, or your visit falls on a Wednesday when its discount applies. Bring your own bathing items and keep the 8 p.m. last-admission time in mind.

Choose Niji no Yu if you are travelling via Ōji or Gojō, plan to use the saunas and multiple pools, want a meal or rest area, or need a later closing time. Its bus connection is manageable, but the timetable should shape your return.

Families should compare child fares as well as adult prices. Niji no Yu charges ¥450 for children aged four through elementary school and ¥100 for ages zero to three; elementary-school children may not bathe alone and need an adult with them. Otonohana lists ¥500 for children below elementary-school age, usually ¥300 on Wednesdays, and free admission for children under three. Otonohana’s adult Wednesday deal is therefore not the only fare difference for a family.
