Tsukigase Onsen or Hari Onsen Land? Nara’s Countryside Baths

Compare Tsukigase’s hilltop outdoor bath with Hari Onsen Land’s 7 a.m. weekend opening, 11 p.m. close and free parking.

Checked: September 27, 2026

Both baths are outside central Nara, but they solve different itinerary problems. Tsukigase works as part of a visit to the plum-growing area and nearby hills. Hari Onsen Land, beside the Hari Terrace roadside station, is a convenient place to stop, bathe and continue driving. If you are choosing on ticket price alone, the difference is small: both charge ¥800 on weekdays, while Hari charges ¥850 on weekends and holidays.

Make Tsukigase the destination

Tsukigase is more than a quick roadside soak. Its elevated view bath looks over the Iga Basin, and the facility has indoor and outdoor pools, a source bath, a dry sauna and a cold bath. The view bath is available from one side of the bathing area and may close in poor weather; the men’s and women’s sides alternate, so check which side is in use on your date.

Tsukigase detailCurrent information
Adult / child admission¥800 / ¥400 for elementary-school children; younger children enter free
TowelsSold, not rented: bath towel ¥350; small towel ¥150
SpringWeakly alkaline simple spring; source 30.5°C; source bath about 30°C
Adult visit with both towels¥1,300

The source-bath temperature is not the temperature of every pool. The operator describes the source bath as deliberately cool.

The nearby scenery is part of the reason to come. In plum season, the area is busier; if a quiet soak matters more than seeing the blossoms at peak, a different time of year may suit you better. Normal closing day is Tuesday, but the operator says it opens on public holidays and runs daily through February and March. Bring cash.

Use Hari as a break in the drive

Hari Onsen Land is inside the Hari Terrace roadside-station area, with free parking reserved for bath users.

Hari Onsen Land detailCurrent information
Admission¥800 weekdays; ¥850 weekends and public holidays
Hours10 a.m.–11 p.m. weekdays; 7 a.m.–11 p.m. weekends and public holidays
Last reception30 minutes before closing
Regular closureWednesday; when Wednesday is a public holiday, it opens and closes Thursday instead

That early weekend opening is useful if you are driving toward Nara’s eastern hills, Mie or Ise. The late closing also leaves more room for a stop on the way back. It is a working road-trip bath, not a scenic mountain excursion. There is one access detail worth knowing if you have limited mobility: the bathing area is on the second floor and the facility says it has no elevator, so the stairs are unavoidable.

Older prefectural listings show superseded prices and schedules for both baths; use the operators’ current pages and Hari’s 2026 calendar for the visit date. Hari takes cash only and does not allow tattoos, including stickers and painted designs.

Public transport changes the calculation

Neither bath is a simple station-front stop. Tsukigase’s rural setting takes extra planning by bus; the operator’s sample journey from Osaka is around two hours and forty minutes. Hari lists bus connections from Haibara and Tenri, but those rides still take roughly 30 and 40 minutes respectively. If you are travelling without a car and only want a short soak, a bath nearer your accommodation may be a better use of the day.

For anyone with limited mobility, note the difference: Hari’s bath is upstairs and there is no lift. Tsukigase’s current public information does not state the same stair-only access restriction, so confirm its actual access arrangements directly rather than transferring Hari’s limitation to both.

Choose Tsukigase when the landscape, view bath and surrounding area justify the detour. Choose Hari when the bath needs to fit around a drive, particularly early on a weekend or late in the evening. The Nara day-use onsen guide covers alternatives closer to the city and other rural facilities.

Both venues take cash only and refuse tattoos, including stickers and painted designs. Hari’s listed source temperature is 28.3°C and marked as heated; it is not the temperature of its bathing pools. Tsukigase suits a longer countryside stop; Hari fits more easily into a drive.
