Irifune Onsen in Shin-Imamiya: Early Baths, Luggage Storage and Sauna

Three minutes from Shin-Imamiya, Irifune opens at 6 a.m. except Monday, accepts tattooed bathers and can hold luggage—handy on arrival or checkout day.

Irifune is a neighborhood bathhouse with unusually practical hours for travellers. On weekdays it opens 06:00–23:00, with last entry at 22:30; Saturday and Sunday hours run until midnight, with last entry at 23:30. Monday is the regular closing day, including when a public holiday falls on Monday.

JR Shin-Imamiya and Osaka Metro’s Dobutsuen-mae are both around a three-minute walk away. The location works well after an overnight bus, before a morning train, or on the day you check out. Irifune’s FAQ says staff can hold suitcases that do not fit in the lockers. Hand over valuables at the desk rather than leaving them unsecured in the changing area.

A proper sauna, but not a natural hot spring

The sauna is a meaningful part of the offer, not a token room: the operator says both sides hold about ten people and lists automatic steam, plus occasional staff-led aroma sessions. Sauna use costs extra and requires Irifune’s designated sauna towel. Children under 12 cannot use the sauna.

Although the name includes “Onsen,” the operator does not publish a natural spring analysis for the bathhouse. Treat it as a well-equipped city sento, not a confirmed natural hot spring. Shampoo and body soap are supplied; there is also a small rest area and light food and drink.

The admission price needs a quick check at the point of purchase. The current operator price page shows its price board as images rather than readable text.

Hotel Kaga, which sells tickets to its guests, lists a regular bath ticket at ¥600 and bath-plus-sauna at ¥1,000. An Irifune event notice in February 2026 quoted ¥680 admission.

The Osaka association’s general sento tariff is ¥600, but that does not resolve the facility-specific discrepancy. Check the current ticket machine or ask at the desk before budgeting around a particular amount.

Ticket referencePublished amountHow to use it
Standard bath ticket via Hotel Kaga¥600A current ordinary-price reference, not a readable price board from Irifune’s own page
Bath plus sauna via Hotel Kaga¥1,000Implies about ¥400 for sauna access
February 2026 event notice¥680Dated offer/reference; not proof of the permanent walk-up rate

The operator also lists cash, PayPay, cards and other electronic payments. If you want the sauna, Irifune supplies its own designated towel and marks paid users with a black wristband; bringing your own bath towel does not replace the required sauna towel. The rooms are listed for about ten people on each side. The sauna was installed in July 2022 and uses a METOS ZIEL heater, with automatic and occasional staff-led aroma löyly sessions.

The cold bath is a standout: the men’s side is about 115 cm deep, while the current facility page lists both an indoor and an outdoor cold bath on the women’s side. Both sides have an outdoor bathing area. Irifune has added cooling and rest space over several renovations; its 2024–25 works included repairs and rebuilding of bathing areas. Those upgrades explain the range of facilities, but do not change the spring-water status.

Basic washing supplies—rinse-in shampoo and body wash—are provided. There is a rest area, drinks and light food, plus free phone and computer charging. Wi-Fi is available through FREESPOT after registration. There is no dedicated visitor car park, so the railway approach is the sensible choice, especially with a suitcase.

The bathhouse’s own FAQ confirms tattoos are accepted. That rule belongs to Irifune; it is not a blanket policy for other Osaka sento. A quick editorial comparison gives Irifune 80/100 for bathing comfort, variety and cleanliness, 65 for atmosphere, 60 for quiet, and 95 for access and value. Those are guide ratings, not customer-review averages. Its station-side location and low-cost morning access are the strongest parts of the case.

If you are choosing among nearby baths, Irifune suits Shin-Imamiya, an early start, luggage storage or a clear tattoo policy. Utopia Shiratama Onsen is better placed for Kyobashi and a focused sauna visit. Yudokoro Abenobashi is the option to investigate if a documented natural-spring pool matters more than being near Shin-Imamiya. The Osaka sento guide can help if none of those areas fits your stay.

For a natural-spring bath elsewhere in Osaka, the Osaka day-use onsen guide is a better starting point. For Irifune, the main draw is its station access, early opening and luggage-friendly setup.
