Day-Use Onsen in Takayu: Tamagoyu, Adachiya or Kagetsu?
Plan a Takayu day bath around the Aattaka-yu renovation, inn hours, current admission and Fukushima Station bus connections.
Checked: September 27, 2026 Takayu’s best-known public bath, Aattaka-yu, is closed for renovation from August 17, 2026, until around mid-February 2027. During the closure, day visitors need to use an inn instead. Tamagoyu is the easiest fit if you can make its midday shuttle; Adachiya combines a 90-minute bath with lounge access; Kagetsu has the longest bathing window and the lowest weekday admission. Each inn has different hours, and none is a substitute for checking the return bus before you go.
| Facility | Adult day-use price | Published bathing hours | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tamagoyu | ¥1,300 | 11 a.m.–2 p.m. and 4–8 p.m.; 90 minutes | Monthly calendar; Wednesday midday is usually closed |
| Adachiya | ¥1,500 | 10:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m.; last reception at 1 p.m. | Closed Tuesdays, Fridays and on the inn’s other closure dates |
| Kagetsu Highland Hotel | ¥1,100 weekdays; ¥1,300 on designated busy days | 11 a.m.–9 p.m. | Day visitors may be turned away on busy days or during maintenance |
| Aattaka-yu | Normally ¥500 | Normally 9 a.m.–9 p.m. | Closed for renovation; expected to reopen around mid-February 2027, date unconfirmed |
Takayu is a bath-first outing
Takayu is a mountain hot-spring area known for cloudy, sulfur-scented water. It is quieter and more rural than Iizaka, but it is not a place to arrive without a plan and choose among shops on the spot. Most day visitors are going to a particular inn, and the public bus from Fukushima Station runs less often than the train to Iizaka.
The bus leaves from the station’s west exit and takes around 36–40 minutes.
| Basic adult trip from Fukushima Station | Bus fare | Bath admission | Transport + bath |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kagetsu, weekday | ¥920 each way | ¥1,100 | About ¥2,940 |
| Tamagoyu | ¥920 each way | ¥1,300 | About ¥3,140 |
Totals exclude towels and food. Tamagoyu sometimes runs a free midday shuttle; check its calendar because confirmed service can substantially reduce transport cost.
Tamagoyu works best when its midday shuttle is running
Tamagoyu’s regular day-use sessions are 11 a.m.–2 p.m. and 4–8 p.m., with 90 minutes in the baths. The midday session is especially convenient without a car: its posted shuttle leaves Fukushima Station’s west exit at 10:40 a.m. and returns from the inn at 1:15 p.m. The service can take longer in winter, and availability depends on the day’s schedule. Check the monthly calendar and current shuttle instructions before building the trip around it.

Tamagoyu is a strong choice for a solo visitor or couple who can work with the midday schedule. It is less flexible if you want to arrive late or stay into the evening. Wednesday midday is generally set aside for cleaning and maintenance, and the inn publishes a monthly operating calendar; check it before buying transport.
Adachiya adds a place to rest after bathing
Adachiya accepts day visitors from 10:30 a.m., with last reception at 1 p.m. The bath is limited to 90 minutes, and admission is ¥1,500 for an adult. Its lounges offer coffee, tea and lemon water to day visitors, which makes the visit feel less rushed once you are out of the bath. The trade-off is the narrow reception window: it is closed to day visitors on Tuesdays, Fridays and other dates set by the inn.
Adachiya also rents its Yakushi-no-yu private bath for an extra charge. Ask whether admission is separate and what the full price will be; reserve ahead if you need that bath, as walk-in availability is not confirmed.
Kagetsu gives you the widest time window
Kagetsu Highland Hotel’s hillside setting gives the visit a more open mountain outlook than a quick stop in town.
| Kagetsu day-use detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Hours | 11 a.m.–9 p.m. |
| Adult admission | ¥1,100 weekdays; ¥1,300 Saturdays, public holidays and listed busy periods, including Golden Week, Obon and year-end/New Year |
The long published window does not guarantee that day visitors will be accepted at every hour. The hotel notes that cleaning, repairs or heavy occupancy can limit access. It also lists a private outdoor bath for ¥2,200, but the public price information does not clearly state in one place how that charge is counted alongside admission. Confirm the total and availability directly if you want to use it.
Kagetsu is often the simplest fit if you need a later visit or want more room in the schedule, but that flexibility is only useful if the bus still works for your return. The last direct bus from Takayu is much earlier than the hotel’s closing time. Check the live timetable and leave enough time to walk to the stop.
What the Aattaka-yu closure changes
When open, Aattaka-yu is the straightforward public-bath option: adult admission is normally ¥500, and private open-air baths can be rented separately. Those are normal operating details, not a ticket you can currently use. Fukushima City says the bath and changing rooms are under renovation from August 17, 2026, with work expected to continue until around mid-February 2027. The reopening date will be announced separately.
That closure lifts the minimum cost of a day trip. During the renovation, the former ¥2,340 estimate (¥920 each way by bus plus ¥500 admission) does not apply.
| Current basic adult outing | Cost before towels, meals or a private bath |
|---|---|
| Kagetsu, weekday, with public bus | About ¥2,940 |
| Tamagoyu, with public bus | About ¥3,140 |
| Tamagoyu admission with its free shuttle confirmed | ¥1,300 |
Three workable half-day plans
No car, simplest transfer: Check that Tamagoyu’s midday session and shuttle are operating. Take the 10:40 shuttle from Fukushima Station, bathe for 90 minutes, then return on the 1:15 service. The schedule is convenient but leaves little room to improvise.
Bath and lounge time: On a day Adachiya accepts visitors, use the 9:23 bus from Fukushima Station and arrive in time for 10:30 reception. Keep the visit to the stated 90 minutes and check the return bus before settling in the lounge. Do not plan this on a Tuesday or Friday without confirming an exception.
More time at the inn: Kagetsu opens for day use from 11 a.m. If you use the bus, choose a return service first; its 9 p.m. closing time is not a reason to stay until the end of the day. The last listed direct return from Takayu is considerably earlier.
For winter visits, allow extra time for the mountain road and check service notices on the day. If you are driving, use winter tires when conditions require them. For a lower-effort rail outing to another Fukushima hot-spring area, compare the Iizaka public bath guide; Iizaka is a different kind of trip, with several walkable public baths rather than a mountain inn visit.
