When to Visit Tamatsukuri Onsen: Cherry Blossoms, Summer Nights and Winter
Use Tamatsukuri’s 2026 calendar as a guide to cherry blossoms, summer events, autumn walks and winter stays; check fresh dates before booking.

Tamatsukuri’s best season depends on what you want to do after check-in. Spring brings a riverside cherry walk, summer has evening performances and a separate firefly shuttle, while autumn and winter suit a quieter stay built around the baths and dinner. The dates below include the 2026 schedule as a reference; most of those events have already passed, and next year’s calendar is not yet confirmed.

Spring: separate the blossom forecast from the festival calendar
The Tamayu River runs through the hot-spring district, with roughly two kilometres of cherry trees along its banks. In 2026, illumination began on March 20 and ran from around 6 to 10 p.m. The Sakura Festival followed from March 27 to April 19, with spring stalls scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. and a local sake event on April 4 and 5. These are separate dates: the lights, stalls and peak bloom do not necessarily line up.
Matsue’s cherry blossoms opened on March 27 in 2026, but the city’s record is not a forecast for every stretch of the river. For a future spring trip, use the festival announcement to decide whether the event itself fits your stay, then check the local bloom updates shortly before travelling. If your weekend is fixed, treat the stalls as the plan and flowers as a bonus. If full bloom is the priority, keep the itinerary flexible rather than booking around a predicted single day.
One night is enough to enjoy a section of the river without turning the walk into a two-kilometre out-and-back. A comfortable rhythm is a short walk before dinner, then a second look at the illuminated stretch afterward. Travellers who would rather avoid a late stroll can walk in daylight and leave the evening for the bath. Matsue Castle makes a useful daytime blossom stop, but the two are easier to enjoy when split across the day.
Summer: two night events, two very different plans
The 2026 firefly shuttle ran June 12–14 and June 19–21 for guests staying at Tamatsukuri Onsen accommodation. It left from in front of Tamatsukuri Onsen Yu-Yu at 8:30 p.m. and took about ten minutes to reach the viewing area in the Otani district.
Visitors walk along paths beside rice fields, and bad weather can cancel the outing. The viewing area is not a walk from the hot-spring street; confirm next season’s dates and arrangements with your inn before planning a June stay around it.
The 45-night summer festival ran July 18–August 31 in 2026. The riverside stage began at 8 p.m. with a rotating local performance, followed by traditional entertainment at 8:45. The program was due to finish at 9:15.
Rain moved the stage to Yu-Yu’s third-floor hall, while the children’s night market remained open. The market usually ran 7–9:30 p.m.; from August 8–16 it opened at 5 p.m. These dates and times were specific to 2026, not a standing promise for future summers.
For families, the night market can fill the gap before the stage. Adults who want dinner at the ryokan should check the meal seating time before booking, since a 7:30 p.m. dinner conflicts with the opening performance. Staying close to the river also makes the walk back easier after the stage, particularly with children or older companions.
Matsunoyu sits by the festival stage area, making it a practical base if the evening program is the point of the stay. Its shared bath uses Tamatsukuri spring water. The four private outdoor baths and the in-room baths use heated water, not natural hot-spring water, so choose it for location and the public bath rather than expecting a private onsen.
Autumn: the river is reliable; the leaves are not
Early autumn is a good time for shorter walks between the river, footbaths and the inn. Tamatsukuri itself should not be treated as a sure bet for a street-wide display of red leaves; check the year’s conditions at gardens and higher-ground spots around Matsue if foliage matters more than the bath.
The 2026 Tamatsukuri Grand Festival is scheduled for October 10, with a ceremony offering the hot spring water in thanks for its continued flow. It is a single-date event, not an all-season program. If you are visiting specifically for the ceremony, check the local announcement for where visitors may watch and the day’s timetable. Otherwise, a regular autumn date leaves more room for a relaxed check-in and an afternoon walk. Daylight shortens through the season, so save the longer riverside stroll for before dinner.
Winter: leave room for weather and the train home
Winter works well as a compact overnight stay: arrive, settle in, eat and bathe, then decide whether the next day’s river walk makes sense. The 2026 Iwami Kagura program at Yu-Yu ran on selected weekends from January 10 through February 22, but that was a dated program, not a guaranteed annual winter event. Wait for a new announcement before building next winter’s booking around it.
Snowfall is not predictable far enough ahead to make it a fixed itinerary feature. Check the forecast and JR West’s live service information shortly before travel. JR Tamatsukuri Onsen Station is outside the ryokan district, so arrange your hotel transfer in advance; Choseikaku, for example, asks guests to contact it at least two days before arrival for station pick-up. If a train runs late, contact the inn about the transfer and dinner instead of assuming either can be held.
For a stay centred on the public baths and garden, Tamatsukuri Grand Hotel Choseikaku has shared baths using Tamatsukuri Onsen, with different bathing areas alternating between men and women. Natural hot-spring water in the room is limited to specified room categories, including the “Izumo” room and selected top-floor rooms; a standard in-room bath is not automatically an onsen bath. Its station pick-up runs from 2 to 7 p.m. and needs to be requested at least two days ahead.
Choosing dates and getting around
Festival nights and holiday weekends can narrow the available room and meal plans. Compare the exact date and room category rather than relying on a broad “spring” or “summer” price; the private-bath and in-room hot-spring details vary by property and room type. The event calendar and lodging availability are separate decisions: an event can go ahead even when blossoms are early or late, and a hotel transfer may require advance notice.
Car-free access is realistic once the last leg is arranged. Local buses run from Matsue Station to the district, while JR trains stop at Tamatsukuri Onsen Station outside it; most visitors staying overnight should ask their ryokan about pick-up rather than assume the station is walkable with luggage.
