Thermae-Yu Shinjuku: Prices, Overnight Fees, Onsen Water and Tattoo Rules

Check Thermae-Yu’s admission and overnight fees, 3–6 a.m. bath closure, Izu spring water, tattoo policy and access from Shinjuku-sanchome.

Thermae-Yu makes sense when you need more than a quick wash. Admission includes a towel set and indoor wear, and the facility has several baths, saunas, places to rest and food service. It is priced like a full-service city spa, not a neighbourhood sento: adult entry starts at ¥3,100 on weekdays and rises to ¥3,200 on weekends, public holidays and listed special dates.

Admission includes indoor wear, a towel set and the ¥150 bathing tax. Between 6 a.m. and midnight, a visit can last up to 18 hours. If you remain between midnight and 6 a.m., the overnight/early-morning surcharge applies; with it, the maximum stay is 24 hours from entry. Re-entry is not allowed. Bedrock sauna is a separate option, currently listed for noon to midnight.

The main baths are cleaned from 3 to 6 a.m., so you cannot bathe during those hours even though the facility itself remains open. A practical plan for a night bus arrival is to bathe before 3 a.m. and rest afterward, or wait until 6 a.m. to enter without the overnight surcharge.

The onsen water comes from Izu

The outdoor bath called Jindai-no-yu uses natural hot-spring water transported from Jindai-no-yu in Naka-Izu. Thermae-Yu lists it as a sodium-calcium sulfate spring with a pH of 9.0. At the Shinjuku facility, the water is heated, diluted, circulated, filtered and disinfected. It is genuine hot-spring water, but it is not a spring rising beneath the Shinjuku building or a 100% free-flowing bath.

Other baths include a carbonated pool at about 1,100 ppm and 38–39°C, hotter and reclining baths, a cold plunge around 17°C and an electrolysed-water bath. The men’s side has a high-temperature sauna around 90°C and a mist/salt sauna around 50°C; the women’s side has a high-temperature sauna around 85°C and a mud/salt sauna around 43°C. The men’s steam sauna returned to service in July 2026 after a temporary equipment issue; check notices if that particular room is essential to your visit.

Tattoo and age rules need a proper check

Thermae-Yu’s tattoo policy is specific and can change. Under the current posted rules, Japanese men and foreign men living in Japan with tattoos or body art are generally refused. Visiting male tourists may enter under an exception that requires a designated cover sticker and proof of travel, such as a passport or ticket. The exception has an arrival-date limit.

Women may enter under a trial policy, with a cover sticker required for a single tattoo larger than 30 by 30 cm. Read the latest official guidance before booking if this affects your plans.

Children under 13 cannot enter. Guests aged 13–17 need age identification and a guardian, and must leave by 8 p.m.

Getting there and deciding if it is worth the spend

Shinjuku-sanchome Station’s E1 exit is about two minutes away. Allow roughly nine minutes from JR Shinjuku’s east exit or Higashi-Shinjuku Station’s A1 exit. Thermae-Yu is a reasonable choice for a long layover, a night-bus gap or a half-day break with bathing and rest under one roof. For a 45-minute bath before bed, a ¥600 neighbourhood sento is usually better value. Compare other options in the Tokyo day-use bath guide or see the Tokyo sento first-visit guide.
