Thermae-Yu vs Spa LaQua: Which Tokyo Spa Fits Your Plans?
Thermae-Yu suits Shinjuku nights; Spa LaQua is by Tokyo Dome, uses its own spring and discounts entry after 7 p.m. Both are full-scale spas.
Choose by location and timing first. Thermae-Yu is handy after a Shinjuku evening and has a relatively predictable adult admission price. Spa LaQua is next to Tokyo Dome City, draws its own natural spring on site and cuts ¥1,000 from admission after 7 p.m. That evening rate can change which one costs less. Both are full-scale urban spas; a short bath is an expensive use of either ticket.
Price depends on the day—and the hour
Thermae-Yu has two adult admission bands. Towels, indoor wear and the bathing tax are included; the overnight stay and bedrock sauna are separate charges.
Spa LaQua uses a date-based adult price. Towels and indoor wear are included, while the after-7-p.m. rate and overnight surcharge are separate. Check the calendar for your date instead of treating the lowest listed rate as a quote.

Natural spring: local source vs water brought from Izu
Spa LaQua uses its own Koishikawa spring, drawn from roughly 1,700 metres below Tokyo Dome City. Its sodium-chloride strong-saline water is heated and circulated through filtration; it is not a 100% free-flowing spring bath.
Thermae-Yu’s outdoor Jindai-no-yu bath uses natural spring water transported from Jindai-no-yu in Naka-Izu. It is a sodium-calcium sulfate spring, but at the Shinjuku facility it is heated, diluted, circulated, filtered and disinfected. The source is natural in both cases; only LaQua draws its spring on site.
LaQua offers natural spring water in several baths, including two outdoor temperatures around 38°C and 43°C. Thermae-Yu’s spring is concentrated in its outdoor bath, while its other draw is the broader bath mix: a carbonated bath around 38–39°C, hot and reclining baths, a cold plunge around 17°C and several sauna options. Both offer a lot to explore, but LaQua is easier to choose if your priority is comparing natural-spring baths.
Late-night bathing is not the same at both places
Thermae-Yu stays open 24 hours, but its second-floor baths close for cleaning from 3 to 6 a.m. You can stay inside, but not bathe then. At LaQua, the usual schedule runs 11 a.m. to 9 a.m. the next day; indoor bathing continues until 8:30 a.m. and outdoor bathing until 7:30 a.m. Individual saunas may close earlier.
These are rest facilities rather than hotel rooms. Loungers and overnight access do not provide a private room or a guaranteed bed. If you need proper sleep before a full day, compare nearby capsule or business hotels instead of treating either spa as accommodation.
Saunas, tattoos and children
LaQua has several sauna rooms on both sides with different heat and humidity settings, plus scheduled aufguss sessions. Thermae-Yu also has a high-temperature sauna and a second steam, salt or mud-style sauna depending on the side; the men’s steam room resumed service in July 2026 after an equipment issue. Check current facility notices if a particular room is the reason for your visit.
The tattoo rules may decide the choice before the price does. LaQua refuses entry to guests with tattoos or body art, including paint and seal tattoos. Thermae-Yu has narrow exceptions that depend on sex, residency and visitor status: for example, some visiting male tourists may enter with the required identification and cover sticker, while Japanese men and foreign residents with tattoos are generally refused. Women are covered by a trial policy with size limits. Read each facility’s current rules directly before booking.
Thermae-Yu is for guests aged 13 and over; 13–17-year-olds need a guardian and must leave by 8 p.m. LaQua excludes children under six. Guests aged 6–17 must be accompanied by a guardian and leave by 6 p.m.; children aged 6–11 need a same-sex guardian.
A straightforward choice
Stay around Shinjuku or need a flexible stop after a late dinner? Thermae-Yu avoids crossing town, and the weekday ticket is easier to budget. Going to a game or concert at Tokyo Dome, or arriving after 7 p.m.? LaQua is a natural fit, especially on a lower-price calendar date.
