Tsuetate Onsen Day Use: Pick the Bath You Came For

Tsuetate’s three main day-use choices are easy to separate once you decide whether you want a shared outdoor-bath circuit or a private room. Kichijo-no-Yu is the only one built around a large garden rotenburo. Kannon-iwa Onsen has the broadest range of private-room styles and a published reception window. Shiraiwa Onsen starts at the lowest room price, but its advertised 24-hour schedule has conflicted with a past on-site early-closing notice, so late-night access needs a phone check.

Kichijo-no-Yu is the landscape bath

Kichijo-no-Yu, operated by Hizenya, has rock, lava, barrel and wooden outdoor pools. Holiday periods may follow the weekend schedule.

The private family-bath cottages are assigned at the counter rather than reserved in advance. The main page confirms garden-facing baths but does not identify every cottage as open-air, so ask what is available if an outdoor tub is essential.

Hizenya’s published rules prohibit guests with tattoos from using its baths; the public rules do not list an exception for private rooms. The garden also involves outdoor walking and steps. If someone in your group has limited mobility, weigh that route before choosing Kichijo for the scenery.

Kannon-iwa gives you control over the room

Kannon-iwa offers wooden, stone, Goemon-style, reclining and child-oriented private baths. Some rooms have an opening ceiling, but not every room is open-air.

The reported bath temperature is around 42°C. A private booking gives a group its own bathing space, but does not lower the water temperature. Tattoo rules and towel charges are not fully listed; bring your own towel and ask about the policy that matters to you.

Shiraiwa is inexpensive, with one important qualification

Each group’s Shiraiwa bath is drained and refilled; visitors add groundwater to adjust the bathing temperature. A May 2024 visitor notice recorded an early-closing sign, so call before planning a late visit.

If you are arriving by bus, opening time can decide the order

Kichijo-no-Yu opens later on weekdays than the two private-bath options. That matters for a morning arrival from Hita: a private bath can be the first stop, while Kichijo works better later in the day or on a weekend when it opens at 11:30. Choose Kichijo if the public garden pools are the reason for coming. Choose Kannon-iwa when the whole group wants a private bath and more room types to choose from.
