Hita to Tsuetate Onsen by Bus: A Car-Free Day Trip
From October 1, 2026, the useful morning bus from Hita is 9:40 a.m.; return services leave Tsuetate at 3:02 and 5:40 p.m. Plan your bath around them.
Tsuetate is close enough to Hita for a day trip, though the bus schedule gives the outing its shape. There is no point choosing a bath first and discovering later that it opens after your ride home. For a private family bath, Kannon-iwa is the simplest fit. Kichijo-no-yu works better on weekends, when its public baths open earlier.

These are the regular-route buses on the Tsuetate line. Hita Bus lists separate weekday, Saturday and Sunday/holiday timetables, so check the operator’s current timetable page for your date before setting out. The displayed schedule is revised from October 1, 2026; older guides may show earlier departures.

For a private bath, take the 3:02 bus back
Kannon-iwa Onsen is the least awkward choice when you want a private room and an uncomplicated timetable. The Tsuetate Onsen Association’s current details are:

Some rooms have opening ceilings. The water may feel hot if you are used to cooler pools.
The 3:02 p.m. return gives you more than four hours between arrival and departure. That is ample time for a bath and a relaxed meal without turning the day into a late finish. If you want to linger longer, the 5:40 p.m. bus reaches Hita Bus Terminal at 6:25 p.m.
Shiraiwa Onsen is the lower-cost alternative: the association lists private rooms from ¥600 per hour, with fresh water drawn for each session. Its page still says it operates 24 hours, but that should not be treated as a guarantee. A visitor report recorded an early closing notice in May 2024, and the page does not explain whether hours have since changed. Call ahead if your plan depends on a late or early visit; for a daytime trip, the 9:40 bus removes most of that uncertainty.

Kichijo-no-yu needs a different return plan
Kichijo-no-yu is the option for a larger, gender-separated outdoor bathing area rather than a private room. Hizenya’s current offering is:

Kichijo-no-yu opens at 3 p.m. on weekdays, so the 3:02 bus is too early for a bath visit. The 5:40 departure allows a short soak before returning.
On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, it opens at 11:30 a.m., making the 3:02 bus possible after a morning arrival. Leave time to walk back to the stop; Hizenya estimates 20–25 minutes from its hotel, and the bath is away from the main hotel area.
Hizenya’s FAQ excludes tattooed guests from its baths and lists no private-room exception. Kichijo-no-yu hours and prices are on its facility page; holiday periods can follow weekend hours, so check the schedule before choosing a bus.
A workable day without a car
For the simplest outing, take the 9:40 a.m. bus from Hita, bathe at Kannon-iwa, then return at 3:02 p.m. You will be back in Hita just after 4 p.m. If Kichijo-no-yu is the point of the trip, choose a weekend or holiday if you want to use the earlier return; on a weekday, stay for the 5:40 bus.
There is little slack in a rural bus schedule. Check for service changes on the day, keep the return time saved offline, and arrive at the stop a few minutes early.
