Chōon Falls and Chikugogawa Onsen: A Ukiha Day Trip

Pair Chōon Falls with a Chikugogawa Onsen soak, but check trail closures and reserve a mountain taxi; local buses do not reach the falls.

Pair Chōon Falls with one bath in Chikugogawa Onsen and leave the rest of the day open. The main waterfall is the focus: Fukaeri Falls and Ono-buchi Falls are currently marked closed because their trails have deteriorated. The summer stream pool and nagashi-sōmen service have also finished for 2026, so they should not be counted on outside their published season.

Driving is the simplest way to make the route. If you are travelling without a car, arrange the mountain ride before booking lunch or a bath; the shared taxi runs infrequently, and Noruto Ukiha does not enter the mountain district.

What is open at Chōon Falls?

Chōon Falls Park is at 3184 Imogawa, Ukiha-machi, Ukiha City. The city lists the park as open all day, with parking for 107 regular cars, two large vehicles and one accessible space. That does not mean every trail is open. Fukuoka Prefecture currently warns that Fukaeri Falls and Ono-buchi Falls are off limits because of trail deterioration. Follow the signs at the site and do not cross a closure barrier.

The stream pool and nagashi-sōmen are seasonal. Their 2026 schedules and prices were:

Activity2026 datesHoursPrice and booking
Stream poolJuly 18–August 2310 a.m.–4 p.m.Free; suggested ¥200 contribution
Nagashi-sōmenJuly 18–August 3010 a.m.; last reception 3:30 p.m.¥600 per serving; no reservations, and service could end when sold out

Those dates apply to 2026 only. Check the city or Ukiha tourism site for any later summer schedule.

Even when the park itself is open, wet rock, streams and mountain roads call for daylight and sensible footwear. Rain is a reason to shorten or skip the waterfall stop, not to press on because the listing says “open all day.”

Driving: waterfall first, bath afterward

For a relaxed day, spend the morning at the main falls and the areas open on the day, then come down for lunch. Go straight to one bath in the afternoon. Do not return to the mountain road after soaking, particularly if daylight is fading.

What you want after the walkA workable bath choiceTiming to keep in mind
Public outdoor bathKuwanoyaListed day-use hours run to 9 pm for last reception; ¥600 weekdays, ¥800 weekends and holidays
Private bath after lunchFukusenkaPrivate sessions are listed from 1–9 pm, ¥2,500 per room for 60 minutes
Kiyonoya private bathBest if you can reach the onsen earlyDay-use family baths stop at 2 pm and cannot be booked in advance

Kuwanoya is the simplest fit if a public outdoor bath is what you want. Fukusenka has more room for an afternoon private session. For current hours, rates, last entry and tattoo policies across five inns, check the Chikugogawa day-use guide and call the bath you plan to use.

Without a car, the shared taxi needs advance planning

Chōon Falls is in the Imogawa mountain area, outside Noruto Ukiha’s service area. Imogawa’s reservation-based shared taxi normally runs Monday to Saturday, except national holidays and December 29–January 3.

One listed pairing leaves Ukiha City Hall at 11:14 a.m., reaches the falls at 11:42 a.m., then returns at 3:09 p.m. and reaches city hall at 3:35 p.m. Confirm the date, stop and return ride with the city before travelling.

The former Ukiha community bus is scheduled to end on September 30, 2026. The city lists Noruto Ukiha, taxis, Nishitetsu buses and JR as alternatives from October 1, while Noruto’s page describes a trial period through September 30. Noruto does not reach the mountain falls. Check the city’s latest notice and arrange a taxi if needed. Without a confirmed Sunday or holiday return ride, skip the waterfall and visit the onsen instead.

Which bath works after the falls?

Kiyonoya’s public bath is the simplest late-day option. Family baths are available only earlier and cannot be booked in advance.

BathHours or last receptionAdult pricePrivate-bath details
Kiyonoya public bath10 a.m.–9 p.m.¥600Family bath: ¥2,500 for 50 minutes; day-use ends at 2 p.m., no advance booking

FukusenkaDay use 1–9 p.m.; last reception 8 p.m.See current admission listingPrivate bath: ¥2,500 per room for 60 minutes

After a full morning at the falls, plan on the public bath rather than counting on a Kiyonoya family-bath slot.

Kuwanoya lists tattoos as not accepted; its private family bath is not stated as an exception. Fukusenka distinguishes small tattoos (about the size of a ¥500 coin) from larger designs, which should use a private bath. Check its current policy if this affects your choice.

For another day without a mountain transfer, see the Chikugo-Yoshii and Chikugogawa route. If the bath is the main reason for going, the day-use comparison is more direct; overnight guests can compare rooms and private sessions in the private-bath guide.
