Where to Stay in Yufuin for Autumn Leaves and an Onsen

Checked: September 27, 2026 “An autumn onsen stay” can mean three different things: seeing leaves inside the property, bathing in an autumn setting, or walking to Lake Kinrinko when the lakeside trees turn. Baien, Gettouan and Bettei Itsuki each offer a different version. Oita’s typical window is late October to mid-November on Mount Yufu and early to mid-November around the lake, but the timing varies with the weather.

No like-for-like rate for two adults, the same date and the same meal plan was established across these properties. Room-bath access, building, meals and cancellation conditions all affect the comparison.

For first-time visitors deciding where to stay, start with Yufuin’s accommodation areas. If autumn scenery is secondary to room baths, shared baths and location, use the Yufuin ryokan comparison.

Three kinds of autumn stay: foliage on site, a bath among the leaves, or Kinrinko

This is not a contest for one overall winner. Decide where you want the autumn scenery: a morning garden walk and public bath at Baien, a private outdoor soak among Gettouan’s trees, or a room bath at Itsuki with the leaves as an added feature. If all you want is to see Kinrinko, you may not need to pay a premium for foliage on the property itself.

Baien: the garden and large outdoor bath make the autumn stay

Baien’s seasonal case is easy to verify: its grounds exceed 10,000 tsubo, about half of which is garden, and the facilities page specifically mentions autumn foliage within the grounds. That is more than having maple trees nearby; the garden is part of the stay.

The bathing setup adds a large outdoor rock bath with a view toward Mount Yufu, a cypress bath under a roof and two family baths that overnight guests can use free of charge. The strongest reason to pay for Baien is being able to split your time between the garden, public outdoor bath and private family bath—not necessarily to book the most expensive room for a view.

Baien’s August 10, 2026 notice says a hot-spring well will be re-drilled on the grounds from August 17 through November 30, generally between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Sundays are not planned work days. Drilling equipment, vibration and work vehicles may affect guests, and weather could shift the schedule.

If you plan to spend the afternoon in the garden or room, the work may affect the main reason for booking. Going out in the morning and returning after 5 p.m. could reduce the overlap. The notice is temporary.

Lake Kinrinko is about a ten-minute walk away, a useful alternative if the garden has not reached peak colour. Gettouan: the forest matters most when you stay on the grounds

Gettouan’s autumn description points to foliage across the property and fallen leaves covering the grounds like a natural red carpet. Its wooded site is around 10,000 tsubo. Instead of a large shared garden, the experience is moving between forest paths, public baths and detached rooms.

All 18 detached rooms have a private open-air bath. You do not need to book an annex room to get that feature; the distinction between the 12 main-building cottages and six annex cottages is about space, dining and additional annex-only facilities. Guests in the annex also have a dedicated private outdoor bath. The annex does not accept children below junior-high age, so families should look at the main building.

Gettouan is better suited to a stay centred on the property than to repeated trips into town. Its current access page puts Yufuin Station about eight minutes away by taxi and says station pickup is suspended. Older wording about a free shuttle remains on the page, but the current suspension notice takes precedence.

The spring is listed at 62°C at source and 42°C at the point of use. Gettouan says it adjusts the temperature with added water while keeping the bath source-flowing; the source temperature is not the tub temperature.

Bettei Itsuki: every room has a private bath, but the style varies

Bettei Itsuki has 14 guest rooms across 13 detached buildings, all with a private natural hot-spring bath that can be used 24 hours. Its facilities page also calls out the garden footbath as an autumn foliage spot. This gives the property two distinct seasonal elements: leaves in the garden, and a private bath in the room.

Not every bath is outdoors. Room layouts include indoor baths, semi-open-air baths, rock-lined semi-open-air baths and separate bathhouses. That range can be useful late in the season: choose an outdoor feel if that is what you want, or an indoor bath if cold air is not part of the appeal. You do not need to pay for an open-air room simply to secure private natural-spring water.

Itsuki is closer to town than Gettouan. The access information puts Yufuin Station at about a 20-minute walk or five minutes by car. The inn does not describe a regular shuttle bus, but its current page mentions a taxi-ticket arrangement for guests travelling between the station or bus centre and the property. That is not the same as a free hotel shuttle; confirm how to use the arrangement in the latest reservation instructions.

Kinrinko foliage is a nearby benchmark, not a reason to move to the forest

Oita’s tourism information gives early to mid-November as the typical foliage window around Lake Kinrinko and late October to mid-November on Mount Yufu. Those ranges are useful for planning, not a guarantee for a specific weekend. Weather affects both timing and the morning mist the lake is known for.

If your goal is simply to see autumn colour in Yufuin, staying near town or the lake and walking there in the morning may be enough. You do not need to choose Gettouan just because it has a forest setting, or Baien just because it has a garden—especially if the 2026 work hours or transport do not suit your itinerary.

Pay more for the property setting only when you expect to use it. Gettouan’s premium is for forest, detached-room privacy and an outdoor bath in every room. Baien’s is for a large garden, a Mount Yufu-facing public bath and family baths. Itsuki’s is for a detached room and 24-hour private spring bathing, with the garden and footbath adding autumn colour. Those are distinct products, not interchangeable foliage packages.

Which part of the day should you save for the leaves?

There is no fixed minute when foliage looks its best, and morning mist is not guaranteed. Use the facilities and weather flexibly:

• Early morning: If you are staying near the centre or lake, walk around Kinrinko before breakfast. Mist is possible in cool, humid conditions, but not something to promise.
• After check-in: Baien suits a garden walk followed by the large bath. Through November 30, 2026, remember that daytime work is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• Evening: At Gettouan or Itsuki, the private spring bath remains part of the stay after daylight fades. The leaves add atmosphere, but they are not the only reason to book.
• The following morning: If rain or a late arrival disrupted the first day, a private in-room bath lets you soak without trying to find an open shared session.

Book around the bath access you cannot do without

Start with the feature that would most disappoint you if it were missing. If it must be a private open-air bath in every room, Gettouan is the clear choice among these three. If you want private natural-spring bathing but do not need it to be outdoors, Bettei Itsuki has a private bath in all 14 rooms, with room-specific styles. If you want a large scenic public bath and family baths, and do not require a guest-room tub, start with Baien.

Tattoo policies are not clearly established across all facilities at any of the three inns. Do not infer permission from an in-room bath or a private-use family bath. Ask the property before the cancellation deadline if this affects your stay.

The key is not to make every table cell look complete. Yufuin has multiple springs, and one inn’s pH, source temperature or flow method cannot be assigned to another property. Where the checked pages do not publish a figure, it stays unknown.

The final filter: would you still want the stay if the leaves miss peak?

Choose Baien if the garden, Mount Yufu-facing bath and free family baths are enough to make the stay worthwhile even with ordinary foliage. For dates through November 30, 2026, be comfortable with the daytime work notice; reconsider if the whole afternoon at the garden is the point.

Choose Gettouan if you would still want a woodland cottage and your own open-air bath without a full red canopy—and if taking a taxi instead of relying on pickup is acceptable. Choose Bettei Itsuki if 24-hour private spring bathing matters most and a garden footbath is a seasonal extra. Travellers who dislike cold air can deliberately pick a more sheltered indoor or semi-open-air bath.

If the stay would feel like a failure without peak foliage, avoid staking a non-refundable rate on a natural event. Choose a room, bath and cancellation policy you would accept regardless, then check the local colour and weather closer to the trip.

Before booking: compare the same date, room and meal plan

The common false bargain is comparing different products: a standard room against one with a private outdoor bath, a breakfast-only plan against two meals, or different cancellation deadlines. Match date, party size, room-bath access, meals and cancellation terms before comparing totals.
