Baien or Gettouan for an Autumn Stay in Yufuin?
Compare Baien’s garden and free family baths with Gettouan’s private outdoor bath in every detached room, plus 2026 work and shuttle updates.
Checked: September 27, 2026 Baien Garden Resort and Yufuin Gettouan both give you room to wander, but autumn looks different at each. Baien’s garden and large outdoor bath face Mount Yufu; Gettouan spreads detached rooms through a wooded site, each with its own open-air bath. The choice is between a garden-and-shared-bath stay and a forest stay with a private bath outside your room. Transport and daytime conditions matter too.
The checked listings did not establish a comparable rate for two adults on the same autumn date and meal plan. Match the building, room bath, meals and cancellation rules before comparing totals.
The short answer: match the stay to your priority
| Your priority | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Autumn colour in a maintained garden | Baien | About half of its 10,000-tsubo grounds is garden |
| A private open-air bath in every room category | Gettouan | All 18 detached guest rooms have one |
| A free private bath for your party | Baien | Two family baths are available to overnight guests when vacant |
| A quieter forest stay with fewer reasons to leave | Gettouan | Detached rooms and wooded grounds suit an on-site day |
| Avoid daytime work during autumn 2026 | Gettouan, based on current notices | Baien’s work is scheduled through Nov. 30, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.; check for changes |
| Getting to or from Yufuin Station | Neither is walkable with luggage | Baien is about five minutes by car; Gettouan about eight minutes by taxi, with pickup suspended |
The useful distinction is not which inn is more famous or which lowest rate looks better. It is whether the room, baths, location and current conditions match the way you want to spend the night.
Autumn colour: garden paths at Baien, wooded cottages at Gettouan
Baien’s grounds exceed 10,000 tsubo, roughly half of which is garden. The inn describes autumn foliage on the property and invites guests to walk the grounds in the cooler weather. The colour is part of the stay itself, rather than a nearby lake being used to imply an autumn setting.
Gettouan also puts the landscape into the stay, but in a different way. Around 10,000 tsubo of woodland, a suspension bridge, a stream and 18 detached rooms make it feel more dispersed. Its autumn appeal is the forest around the cottages, rather than a large shared garden as at Baien.
Choose Baien if an afternoon garden walk followed by a large public bath sounds right. Gettouan fits guests who would rather return to their own detached room, soak in its outdoor bath and keep contact with shared spaces to a minimum.
The 2026 foliage forecast adds uncertainty. Weathernews’ first forecast, issued September 3, expected many Kyushu locations to turn slightly later than average, with a broad window from early November into mid-December. That is a regional outlook, not a prediction for either property on a particular day. Check the local colour report near departure. It does mean Baien’s November work period is likely to overlap with autumn travel, so it cannot be dismissed as an old summer notice.
Bathing: Baien has a large public bath and free family baths; Gettouan has an outdoor bath in every room
At Baien, both the men’s and women’s bathing areas have a Mount Yufu-facing outdoor rock bath and a cypress bath under a roof. Overnight guests can also use two private family baths free of charge, without advance booking, when vacant. The listed hours are 3 p.m.–midnight and 6–10 a.m. The shared baths are handy for couples and families, but a first-come bath cannot guarantee a particular time.
Baien also has detached rooms with outdoor or semi-open-air guest baths, alongside main-house rooms. Check each room name: staying at Baien does not automatically mean the room has a private hot-spring bath.
Gettouan’s 18 detached rooms all have a private open-air bath. Guests in the 12 main-building cottages can use that room bath without upgrading to the annex. The main building also has men’s and women’s public indoor and outdoor baths. Guests staying in the six-room annex get access to an additional private-use outdoor bath reserved for that building. The annex does not accept children below junior-high age, so families should choose from the main building.
The spring details are not identical. Baien lists a source-flowing simple spring, described as neutral, low-tonicity and high-temperature; its main pages do not publish current source temperature, pH, flow rate or a fixed temperature for every tub. Gettouan lists the Tsukitoan source at 62°C and the water at the point of use at 42°C, and says it adds water to adjust temperature while keeping the baths source-flowing. The 62°C figure is not the bath temperature, and 42°C should not be presented as a constant for every guest bath.

Travelling with children: Baien is simpler; Gettouan requires the right building
Baien’s two family baths list baby beds, and overnight guests can use them at no extra charge. That makes a shared family soak more straightforward with a baby or young child. They are not reservable, though, so allow for a wait around dinner time.
Children can stay in Gettouan’s main building, but guests below junior-high-school age are not accepted in the annex. If you want the annex’s extra privacy and dedicated outdoor bath, this policy rules it out for a family with younger children. The main building still offers a private open-air bath in every detached room, so the whole property is not adults-only.
For a family wanting a large public bath plus a family bath with baby equipment, Baien is easier to assess. If a private outdoor bath in the room is the priority, Gettouan’s main building remains a strong option.
Getting there without a car: Gettouan’s pickup is suspended
Baien’s current access page puts Yufuin Station about five minutes away by car and says there is no station shuttle. The walk takes around 30 minutes, which is not a good default with luggage. From Baien, Kinrin Lake is around ten minutes on foot and Yunotsubo Street about 15 minutes.
Gettouan lists a taxi ride of about eight minutes from the station. Its access page still contains older wording about a free shuttle by reservation, but also explicitly states that pickup is currently suspended. For an autumn 2026 trip, plan and budget for a taxi both ways rather than relying on outdated guide text.
Baien has the shorter station drive, but neither property is a station-side walk-in stay. If bulky luggage and fewer taxi rides are a priority, compare Yufuin’s stay areas or a station-walkable option such as Yufuin Sansuikan in autumn.
Older guests and mobility: check slopes and stairs as well as the room bath
Gettouan notes slopes between the main building and annex and stairs in several parts of the property. Wet leaves and slippers can make those paths harder to manage in autumn. If someone has weak knees, ask which route connects the exact room to dining and public baths before booking.
Baien’s public bath also requires a roughly 20-metre sloped path. It is short, but still worth checking for a wheelchair user, someone with a walker or anyone uncomfortable on a wet slope. A private room bath reduces some trips around the property; meals, check-in and other facilities still involve walking.
Baien’s 2026 construction notice changes the comparison
Baien’s well re-drilling is scheduled from August 17 to November 30, 2026, generally from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays are not planned work days. The inn warns of possible drilling noise, vibration and work vehicles, and weather may affect the schedule.
That does not mean the baths are closed. If you arrive after 3 p.m., go back out before 5 p.m. and use the inn in the evening and early morning, the overlap may be limited. If you are paying for an afternoon in the garden or a quiet room, the notice directly affects the experience you are buying.
Gettouan has no comparable work notice currently extending into the autumn period. Its main-building repairs announced for July 2026 were completed; do not assume that work is continuing into November. For Gettouan, the current practical uncertainty is the suspended shuttle, not construction.
For noise-sensitive guests staying in November, Gettouan is the simpler choice on current notices. For guests who will be out sightseeing during the day and return to Baien after 5 p.m., the project may not be enough to rule out the garden inn.
Compare the same room product on booking sites
Before comparing rates, separate Baien’s main-house rooms, detached rooms, and detached rooms with outdoor or semi-open-air baths. At Gettouan, distinguish the 12 main-building rooms from the six annex rooms. A base room at one property is not comparable to a special annex room at the other. Match dates, guest count, meals, bath access and cancellation conditions.
How to decide
Choose Baien if you want the garden, large outdoor bath and option of a shared private family bath, and your dates and noise tolerance fit the current work notice. Choose Gettouan if a private outdoor bath in your room is non-negotiable and a wooded stay sounds appealing—provided you are comfortable arranging a taxi instead of relying on station pickup.
