Baien or Nihon no Ashitaba? Two Very Different Ways to Bathe Privately

Baien asks you to share the main bath with other guests and use a family bath when one is vacant. Nihon no Ashitaba turns its shared bath collection into private-use sessions; that does not mean every cottage has its own tub.

Baien is easier if you want one strong public bath

Baien’s public bathing area has a large outdoor rock bath facing Mt. Yufu and a cypress indoor bath. Guests also have two private family baths at no extra charge, used when vacant rather than booked in advance. The family rooms include baby beds, though the route to the main baths runs along a short sloped path and the property notes that it has stairs and is not fully barrier-free.

The room split matters: the main-building rooms have no guest bath. Among the 12 detached rooms, four have an outdoor bath, one has a semi-open-air bath, and the rest do not list an in-room tub. If private bathing at any hour is essential, book one of the specified bath rooms; the detached label by itself is not enough.

Ashitaba is about choosing which shared bath to use

Nihon no Ashitaba describes all of its on-site hot springs as private-use. The range includes a large outdoor bath with a Mt. Yufu view, a small bath tucked beside bamboo, and six private-use baths in the Showa-era bath area. You use a shared facility on your own rather than joining a public mixed group; availability and current use rules should be confirmed with the inn.

Its 13 cottages are spread across a large, hillside property. Some rooms have indoor or outdoor guest baths, while others do not. For example, the official room listings show dedicated indoor baths in some cottages and open-air or semi-open-air tubs in others. If you want to step into a bath from your own room at midnight, choose by cottage name. If you only need privacy for the soak, the shared private-use baths may be enough.

How to decide without comparing unlike rooms

Choose Baien if the large shared outdoor bath is a major part of the trip, you want town walks to remain feasible, and a private family soak once or twice is sufficient. Choose Ashitaba if you would rather rotate among several private-use baths and are happy to spend more of the stay on the grounds.

The room-price comparison needs an extra step. Match a Baien standard room against an Ashitaba cottage without its own tub; compare private-bath rooms only when both listings actually include a room bath. Check whether the latter is indoor, semi-open-air or outdoor, and whether the booking conditions include the same meals and cancellation terms.

For Ashitaba, also check how you will get there and move around the property. It sits away from central town, and a private-use bath system does not eliminate walks between the cottage and shared baths. Ask about the path and transfer arrangement if you are travelling without a car or with someone who has limited mobility.

One current note for Baien: well re-drilling work is listed through November 30, 2026, generally during the day. The inn warns that noise, vibration and work vehicles may affect the grounds, with weather potentially changing the schedule. Confirm the latest status if your stay falls before the stated end date.
