Yufuin Onsen Without a Car: A Practical Day-Use Plan From the Station
Plan a car-free Yufuin bath day with luggage storage and the right timing for Musouen, Yufudake Onsen or Sansuikan before your train.
Checked: September 27, 2026 You can have a good onsen day in Yufuin without renting a car, but the baths do not all sit on the station’s doorstep. Decide whether you want a scenic half-day soak, the lower-cost public bath, or a final dip near the train. For Musouen and Yufudake Onsen, a short taxi ride is often more workable than building the day around an unverified bus connection.
First, sort out the bags and the station works
The Yufu City Tourist Information Center next to the station has Yufuin Chikki baggage storage from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It also delivers luggage to participating inns: drop-off at the center is accepted until 3 p.m., while collection from an inn for return to the center closes at 11:30 a.m. Not every accommodation is eligible, and the partner list can change, so check before using delivery. Temporary storage and coin lockers are open to all visitors during the posted hours.
Yufuin Station is operating from a temporary building during repair work. JR Kyushu says the original station closed from March 26, 2026, and the work is expected to continue until around winter 2026. The platform footbath has been closed since March 14 for the duration of the work, and some of the station-front plaza is affected. Do not count on the footbath as a backup soak or assume the familiar station façade will be unobstructed.
For a morning soak and a view: go to Musouen first
Musouen is on higher ground, around seven minutes from Yufuin Station by taxi. Day-bathing reception runs 10 a.m.–2 p.m.; bathing ends at 2:30 p.m. Go in the morning if you want time there before lunch.

The large outdoor baths look toward Mount Yufu. Family indoor and outdoor baths are included with day admission when vacant, but they cannot be reserved. The family indoor baths are unavailable Mondays and the family outdoor bath Tuesdays; other baths also have scheduled cleaning days. Ask about the day’s available baths before making the taxi ride.
For a lower-cost public bath: check Yufudake Onsen’s seasonal hours
Yufudake Onsen has indoor and outdoor public baths, plus family-bath rooms. Its seasonal schedule and admission are:

The closing day is irregular, and weather can change the hours.
The association confirms that family baths are available but does not publish their current rates. If a private room is essential, call ahead and ask both about cost and which room is operating. The listing places the facility within walking distance of Unagihime Shrine, but does not give a reliable walk time from the station; with children, rain or a tight return, use a taxi for the last stretch.
Keep Sansuikan for the station-side afternoon
Sansuikan is about an eight-minute walk from Yufuin Station. Day-use bathing is usually 1–4 p.m. Its public baths are separated by gender; standard admission does not include a private bath.

Leave a return buffer
Do not plan to finish bathing at closing time and walk straight onto a train. Allow time to change, reach the station, collect luggage and check the day’s train schedule.
