After Checkout in Yufuin: Luggage, One Last Soak and the Train Home
Yufuin’s 3:56 p.m. Yufuin no Mori leaves a practical window for one last bath. Factor in station luggage service and the walk to Lake Kinrinko.
Start with your train time. On dates when the Yufuin no Mori operates, departures from Yufuin Station are 12:01 pm, 3:56 pm and 5:17 pm. Some runs may be replaced by the limited express Yufu, so check the operating calendar and exact service for your date.
A 12:01 departure leaves little room for a bath after checkout; 3:56 pm is easier to plan around. The 5:17 pm train gives you more afternoon time, but the station’s baggage counter closes at 5 pm.
Three departure times, three different checkout days
These examples assume a morning checkout and a walk of about 25 minutes each way between Yufuin Station and Lake Kinrinko. Your ryokan’s checkout time, whether it can forward your bags, and the train running on your travel date can all change the plan.
| Train from Yufuin | A workable checkout-day plan | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 12:01 pm | Leave your bags at the station or arrange delivery; keep the morning for breakfast and checkout rather than adding a lakeside bath | An early departure or a same-day connection |
| 3:56 pm | Check out, store or forward your bags, walk to Lake Kinrinko for one bath and lunch, then return to the station with time to collect your luggage | A last soak without rushing the entire day |
| 5:17 pm | Add lunch or a longer walk, but return to the station by about 4:30 pm to collect your bags | A slower afternoon, with the luggage cutoff firmly in mind |
Decide where your bags will go
Yufuin Chikki, on the first floor of the Yufu City Tourist Information Centre beside the station, offers baggage storage, coin lockers and delivery between eligible ryokan and the station. The counter and lockers are listed as open from 9 am to 5 pm.
The delivery deadlines depend on direction: bags going from Chikki to a ryokan are accepted until 3 pm; bags being collected from a ryokan and sent back to Chikki on checkout day are accepted only until 11:30 am. Delivery is limited to participating inns, so ask your ryokan the night before whether it is on the current list and whether it will handle the service. A cutoff time is not a promise that your bag will be waiting immediately at the station; confirm the expected collection time.
Storage is priced by bag size, and the current listing adds an overweight fee for bags weighing 20 kg or more. Check the latest Chikki service details for current rates and eligible ryokan. If your inn is not included, take your bags to the counter yourself. For a 5:17 pm train, aim to collect them by 4:30 pm rather than cutting it close to closing time.
The 3:56 pm train: time for one bath by Lake Kinrinko
With a 10 am checkout, leave your bags at Chikki or confirm that your ryokan will send them to the station. Lake Kinrinko is about a 25-minute walk from the station, and Oyado Nurukawa Onsen is about a minute from the lake. Its nine baths use natural spring water.
The tourism listing gives day-use hours of 8 am–7 pm and lists Tuesdays and the second Wednesday of each month as closing days. The listed adult entry fee is ¥600, based on January 2026 information; check the current price before you go.
A relaxed outline could look like this: check out at 10 am, walk from the station area towards the lake around 10:30, and reach the bath around 11. Give yourself roughly an hour for bathing, changing and a short rest, then have lunch and take a walk along Yunotsubo Street. Leave the lake area around 2:15 pm, walk back to the station and collect your bags before the 3:56 departure.
If Nurukawa is closed on your date, Otomaru Onsen Hall is a community bath near the station. The tourism listing gives hours of 6:30 am–10 pm, closure on the third Thursday of each month and a ¥300 admission fee for adults and children, based on January 2026 information. Confirm the latest details before setting out. These are public baths where men and women bathe separately; they are not direct alternatives for anyone who needs a private bath or wants to bathe with a partner.
If it is raining heavily or you check out late, skip the lake walk. Store your bags near the station, use Otomaru if it is open, and keep lunch nearby. That avoids carrying wet clothes and luggage back through the lakeside paths. If anyone in your group cannot use a gender-separated bath, make another plan rather than relying on a last-minute private-bath booking.
The 12:01 pm train is too early for a last-minute bath
The walk from Yufuin Station to Lake Kinrinko takes about 25 minutes each way. Add bag storage, the bath and changing, and there is little margin before a 12:01 departure. If that is your train, take your final soak before checkout—perhaps in your ryokan’s own bath—and keep the morning for breakfast, luggage and boarding.
The 5:17 pm train does not extend the baggage counter’s hours
The train’s departure time and Chikki’s closing time are separate. The baggage counter and lockers close at 5 pm; the walk from Lake Kinrinko takes about 25 minutes. Leave the lake area by around 4 pm and aim to collect your bags by 4:30 pm. A bath listed as open until 7 pm is not a reason to stay until closing if you still need to return to the station.
Once you have your bags, check the platform and ticket, then stay near the station. If the ryokan arranged delivery, allow time for staff to locate the bags and verify the count. With a group, one person can collect the luggage while someone else waits with the rest of the party. Do not make the final minutes before the counter closes your only buffer.
The Yufuin no Mori is all-reserved seating. JR Kyushu’s current timetable lists the 12:01 pm, 3:56 pm and 5:17 pm departures from Yufuin for Hakata, but the operating calendar identifies dates when a limited express Yufu runs instead. The substitute train has a different service and may not have the Yufuin no Mori’s onboard staff or sales. Confirm the train shown on your ticket and the operating calendar before planning around the ride.
The Yufuin no Mori has steps at the entrance and a narrow aisle. If you use a wheelchair, need boarding assistance or have a large suitcase, ask JR Kyushu about the specific trainset and luggage space before booking. Some dates use a different train, so do not assume the same facilities on every service.
Yufuin Station is undergoing repair work through around winter 2026. During construction, the station’s art hall and platform footbath are closed, so do not count either as a backup soak. Check the station notice again close to your visit in case the works or access arrangements change.
