Yufuin Santoukan: Is a Room With an Open-Air Bath Worth It?
All 12 Santoukan rooms have private indoor hot-spring baths for 24-hour use; six add an outdoor bath. The upgrade buys open-air bathing, not privacy.
Checked: September 27, 2026 Santoukan starts from a generous baseline: all 12 guest rooms have a hot-spring bath, and the official room page says it can be used 24 hours a day. Six rooms add a private open-air bath. That makes the room decision unusually clear: pay more for outdoor bathing and its setting, not for privacy itself.
Compare the room location as well as the bath
The second-floor rooms include views toward Mount Yufu. Six first-floor rooms have their own outdoor bath, with details such as bath material and room layout varying by category. If you will mostly use the private indoor bath and the inn’s public baths, a standard room already covers the central onsen need. The open-air category makes more sense if bathing outdoors is part of why you are staying.
The two public baths, one built around hinoki and the other stone, change between men’s and women’s use. Guests can also use the public bath at neighbouring sister property Ryotei Tanokura. That gives you another setting to try without making a room with an outdoor bath a requirement.
The stay is built around dinner, too
Santoukan is a kaiseki ryokan. Its official site lists a two-meal plan with dinner and breakfast served in the guest room, and seasonal cooking featuring local ingredients and Bungo beef. If you are arriving late, note the current check-in window and contact the inn if your train or bus may arrive after 6 p.m.
The property is close to Lake Kinrinko and Yunotsubo Street, while Yufuin Station is around a 15-minute walk away. For an arrival with luggage, the inn lists pickup from Yufuin Station or the bus centre by prior contact; ask the property to confirm timing rather than relying on an unscheduled shuttle.
