Hotel Arthur KITAHAMA BASE: a Beppu Station stay with a proper sauna and a late checkout
Three minutes from Beppu Station, Hotel Arthur has a natural spring bath, sauna and cold plunge. Guestroom tubs are not onsen; check-in starts at 5 p.m.
Hotel Arthur KITAHAMA BASE suits travellers who care more about a walkable base, a hot spring bath and a decent sauna than a roomy guest room or an early check-in. JR Beppu Station is about three minutes away on foot. The hotel’s natural hot spring, sauna and cold plunge are in its third-floor gender-separated public baths; the tubs in guest rooms are regular baths, not private onsen.
There is one timing wrinkle to plan around: check-in starts at 5 pm, later than at most hotels. In return, checkout is at noon. If you arrive early, luggage storage lets you head into town, but it does not mean your room will be ready sooner.
The bath is the main reason to book
The hotel’s Ichome Onsen uses its own source and is described by the property as 100% free-flowing. Published spring data lists a bicarbonate spring (sodium, calcium and magnesium bicarbonate), a source temperature of 55°C and pH 7.64. Those are source details, not a promise that every tub sits at 55°C; the hotel does not publish a full treatment record for each bath.
Both men’s and women’s baths have a high-temperature sauna and cold plunge. The layouts differ, though, and they do not switch sides: the men’s bath has an indoor bath and an outdoor-air ceramic tub, while the women’s side has an oval bath and a waterfall-style bath. Don’t book on the assumption that both guests in a couple will get the same open-air setup.
Bathing hours are 5:00–10:00 am and 5:00 pm–midnight. The baths close at 10 am even though checkout is not until noon, so an unhurried final soak after breakfast is not on the cards.
Guests with tattoos cannot use the public baths under the hotel’s current rules. Since the hot spring and sauna facilities are all in those baths, this is a major limitation, not a minor footnote. A guest-room bath is available for washing, but it is not a natural hot spring.
Pick a room by bed width and luggage space
The hotel lists eight room types, from an 11 m² single to a 26 m² triple. All rooms have a private bathroom and toilet, but none is listed as having an in-room hot spring bath.

For two people with full-size suitcases, the smallest double options can feel tight. If you spend most of the day out and just need a place to sleep and bathe, a Double or Queen may be enough; if you want to unpack properly, compare the larger twins before choosing by price alone. Child occupancy limits vary by room type and are not a substitute for checking the actual booking plan, including meals and fees.
Breakfast is early, and it does not run every day
The buffet is served at Silk Road on the 10th floor from 6:30 to 9:00 am.
The hotel lists a walk-in price of ¥2,200. The prepaid price is ¥2,000 when purchased by the day before.
Expect Japanese and Western dishes, including Oita favourites such as chicken tempura and fried chicken. Tuesday is normally a rest day, though the schedule can change, so check your date before paying for a breakfast plan.
It works well for early risers who want to bathe, eat and still have time before a train. If you rarely leave bed before nine, the short service window makes breakfast poor value.
Getting around and parking
Hotel Arthur is roughly a three-minute walk from Beppu Station’s east exit and about six minutes from Beppu Kitahama Bus Center. The location makes it easy to reach restaurants around Kitahama without arranging another ride.
Drivers use nearby partner car parks. The hotel currently describes one free 24-hour ticket per night, counted from entry, but the car parks cannot be reserved. If you take the car out during that period, the extra parking charge is yours; height limits also vary by lot. This is useful for parking once and exploring on foot, less so if you plan several drives in and out.
Who will get the most from it?
Choose Hotel Arthur for the station access, the sauna-and-cold-plunge setup on both sides, and a noon checkout. The later 5 pm check-in is easier to live with if you have a plan for your afternoon in Beppu.
It is a poor fit if you have tattoos and need the public bath, want a private in-room onsen, need a bath after 10 am on departure day, or expect a large room at a low price. Before booking, check the room’s actual floor area, the breakfast schedule and the parking arrangement for your vehicle.
