Hanamaki Onsen or Dai Onsen? A Day-Use Guide to the Northern Hot Springs
Choose Hanamaki Onsen for modern hotel baths and sauna, or Dai Onsen for a smaller district and lower entry. Hanamaki tickets cover one hotel bath each.
Hanamaki Onsen and Dai Onsen sit on the same bus corridor north of Hanamaki Station, but they offer very different day trips. Hanamaki Onsen is a resort complex with three large hotels, long bathing windows and contemporary facilities. Dai Onsen is a compact mountain settlement where individual inns set their own hours and may limit walk-in bathers.

Hanamaki Onsen’s prices took effect on May 1, 2026. Check the operator’s date-specific notice before visiting on a holiday or designated busy day. Dai Onsen’s two inns are not interchangeable: Matsudaya starts later, while Kankoso warns that it may stop day admission from 14:30 to 18:30 on busy dates or refuse entry when baths are crowded.
The three Hanamaki Onsen hotels are not a one-ticket circuit
Overnight guests can move between the hotels’ baths through the connected resort, subject to the current guest arrangements. A day-use ticket covers the bath at the hotel where you buy it. Pick one before paying.
Momiji-no-yu at Hotel Koyokan is the clearest match for a sauna visit: its current bath listing includes a sauna, outdoor stone bath, individual ceramic tubs and an outdoor cooling area. Hotel Hanamaki’s regular Hanamaki-no-yu has an outdoor bath and sauna; the garden bath Hanamaki Manten-no-yu is a separate admission product, and the hotel’s private baths are charged by the room in addition to each visitor’s entry. Senshu-no-yu at Hotel Senshukaku is worth checking if its range of bath styles or family amenities matters more than an outdoor view.
The resort publishes a mixed-source spring at 61.6°C, adjusted for bathing. Its bathing overview says the water uses both flow-through and recirculation filtration, with chlorine-based disinfection. The source temperature is not the temperature of the pools, and this is not a no-treatment spring bath.
Dai Onsen suits a shorter list of priorities
Matsudaya has the lower adult admission, though day-use bathing starts later. Kankoso opens earlier and publishes rates for adults and children.

Getting there
Iwate Kenkotsu’s current fare table lists ¥510 one way from Hanamaki Station to Hanamaki Onsen and ¥580 to Dai Onsen. Both are served by the Hanamaki Onsen Line, but check the timetable for your travel date and leave time for the return bus. A free shuttle advertised by lodging providers is for guests staying at participating inns and requires advance booking; it is not a day-use bus.
