Higashiyama Onsen Day Baths: Gorge Views, City Views or Longer Hours?
Compare Higashiyama’s Harataki, Onyado Toho and Grand Hotel day baths by spring, views and entry hours; confirm ryokan availability before travelling.

The first decision is the time you can reach the bath. Harataki’s day-use window runs into the evening, Toho only takes day visitors for a short afternoon period, and Grand Hotel gives you a morning or evening option. Trying to visit two in one day usually adds more bus and check-in time than the second bath is worth.

Same-day closures, holiday schedules and capacity can change what is available. Harataki may shorten reception when busy. Toho requires a call in advance and can turn away day visitors depending on occupancy. Grand Hotel excludes some busy dates and may refuse entry when crowded. Check before travelling across town.
Entry fees are only part of the day’s cost. The Grand Hotel rents towels for ¥330, making a weekday adult visit about ¥1,330 if you arrive empty-handed. A weekend or holiday visit is about ¥1,430 with a towel; on a peak date, about ¥1,980.
Harataki’s ¥1,100 already includes a mini towel, but its listing does not include a large towel rental price. Toho’s day-use page does not clearly publish a complete towel-set price, so confirm before setting a fixed budget. Bus or taxi fares are extra at all three.
Harataki: bathing beside the gorge
Harataki’s open-air bath uses its own spring source and flows without recirculation, with the Yugawa and the natural waterfall below as the setting. The source analysis lists a sulphate spring at 56.5°C; the stated bath temperature is 43°C. The hotel also has an indoor bath, but its most distinctive day-use feature is the open-air pool.
Entry is listed from 1 pm to 8 pm. When the facility is busy, reception can end earlier. A mini towel is included in the ¥1,100 adult admission. If you are travelling by bus, note the access distinction: Harataki’s complimentary pickup is available for overnight guests and lunch visitors, not people coming for a bath only.
Toho: beautiful, but plan around the clock
Toho’s outdoor baths look across the city. Day-use reception is limited to the afternoon, and guests must leave by 4 pm.

This is a poor last-minute choice if you are still sightseeing across town at 2:30. Call first, then work backwards from the reception deadline. From Aizu Bukeyashiki-mae, phone Toho for a pickup; it normally arrives in about five minutes. That is a stop-to-hotel transfer, not a shuttle from Aizu-Wakamatsu Station.
Grand Hotel: use the morning or evening slot
Grand Hotel offers morning and evening sessions. The hotel may suspend day use on peak dates; check its day-trip notice before travelling.

For an evening soak, the schedule is easier to fit around the city’s historic sights than Toho’s afternoon reception. The trade-off is that the bath is part of a large hotel complex rather than a small waterside inn.
Check the tattoo rule at the specific hotel
Harataki generally excludes tattooed guests from its public and outdoor baths, but its official guidance allows a narrow exception for overseas visitors with fashion, cultural or religious tattoos after advance approval. Toho prohibits tattoos. Grand Hotel allows bathing only when its specified paid cover patches fully conceal the tattoo. These are not interchangeable town-wide rules: get the property’s approval before travelling if this affects your choice.
