Suzuran no Yu: A Garden Onsen on Kobe’s Arima Kaido

Suzuran no Yu is in northern Kobe, not Arima Onsen; check its ¥1,000 weekday or ¥1,200 weekend admission and limited Sannomiya shuttle.

The name can send first-time visitors in the wrong direction. Suzuran no Yu stands in Kobe’s Kita Ward, along the road toward Arima, while the Arima Onsen resort—with its historic streets, ryokan and Kinsen and Ginsen baths—is farther on. Choose Suzuran no Yu for a garden-bath complex and sauna day. If the old hot-spring town is the point of your trip, start with the Arima day-use onsen guide instead.

What admission covers

VisitAdult admissionHours and last entry
Bath and regular sauna¥1,000 weekdays; ¥1,200 weekends, holidays and special operating days10 am–midnight; last entry 11 pm
Bedrock-bath package¥2,000 daily10 am–11 pm; last entry 10 pm
Mugwort-steam package¥3,800 daily10 am–9 pm; last entry 8 pm
Herbal-bath package¥4,500 daily10 am–9 pm; last entry 8 pm

Children aged 7–12 pay ¥600 on weekdays or ¥800 on weekends and holidays. Children under 6 enter free with an adult. The bedrock and relaxation areas have separate age restrictions; the facility says junior-high-school students cannot use them even with an adult, so check directly if you are bringing an older child.

The basic admission includes the sauna, but not towels. A hand towel is ¥150, a bath towel ¥200, or the pair ¥300. The bedrock package includes admission, both towels, spa wear and a large towel for the stone-bath area. It makes sense if you expect to use that area; for a quick soak and sauna, the standard ticket is enough.

The water is not all handled the same way

The facility describes its natural spring as a weakly alkaline simple hot spring drawn from 1,100 metres underground. Its current bath guide labels several pools as flowing spring water, while others use circulating spring water. A separate garden pool introduced in 2025 is more clearly specified: the freshly drawn spring water is used without heating, dilution or recirculation. That is the pool to look for if water handling is part of your decision.

Some other tubs use Rokko Miyamizu, the mineral-rich water associated with Nada sake brewing. It is a different water source, not another natural hot spring. Individual bath labels matter here; the names and number of pools alone do not tell you what water is in each one.

The outdoor bathing area alternates between a bamboo-grove setting and a maple-grove setting, with the men’s and women’s areas switched periodically. The facility’s monthly calendar shows the usual rotation, but it notes that maintenance can change it.

The outdoor sauna is currently for men

Forest Sauna Jouan opened in the garden-bath area in 2025. The facility describes a three-tier tower with space for up to 33 people, self-löyly and self-whisking with birch branches. It is a substantial part of the visit if you enjoy sauna culture, rather than just an extra dry sauna beside the baths.

There is an important catch: the facility’s current FAQ says Jouan is operating for men only. The women’s bath still has its own sauna facilities, but women should not plan around using Jouan. Sauna use in the regular bathing area is included in the entry fee; the bedrock, mugwort and herbal relaxation programmes cost extra.

Reaching the baths from Sannomiya

Suzuran no Yu runs a free shuttle from Sannomiya and local stations, including routes serving Tanigami and Suzurandai. The timetable and pickup points change, so check the current shuttle information before travelling. There is no marked bus stop at each pickup point: stand where the operator specifies and signal the bus when it approaches. Arrive at least five minutes early.

The shuttle has a 25-seat limit, cannot be reserved and may leave you behind if it is full. Traffic can also push the arrival 15–30 minutes late. The Sannomiya return service requires passengers to get off in Sannomiya. If you have a train or flight to catch, leave a generous buffer or use another route rather than timing the trip to the last possible shuttle.

The ride is most worthwhile when you plan to use more than one part of the facility. If you are based near JR Rokkomichi or Sumiyoshi and only have an hour, compare a closer option in the Kobe city onsen guide before crossing town.

Tattoo rules are inconsistent across the facility’s own pages

Do not rely on a single published tattoo rule. The Japanese FAQ says admission is possible if the tattoo is fully covered by up to five facility-sold seals measuring about 10 × 10 cm each. The English price page says up to four different seals, 10 × 15 cm, at ¥200 each. The current Japanese bath guide still says guests with tattoos are refused, without stating that an exception applies.

Because these pages conflict on the number, size and even whether cover-up seals are accepted, contact the facility before visiting if you have a tattoo. Do not assume that your own tape, stickers or a towel will be accepted; the FAQ specifically rules those out.

Is it worth the trip?

Suzuran no Yu works well as a half-day outing from central Kobe if you want an outdoor-bath setting, sauna and a place to stay for a few hours. The weekday entry price is modest for that mix, and the shuttle can remove the need to plan a separate mountain-side bus connection. Give the ride enough slack, though; the shuttle is a convenience with limited capacity, not a guaranteed departure at an exact minute.

For a short stop near a train station, a visit to the Kobe city onsen options is easier to fit in. For Kinsen, Ginsen and the traditional resort atmosphere, go to Arima Onsen itself.
