Your Last Onsen in Kyushu After Checkout: A Station-by-Station Plan

Fit one last Kyushu bath between checkout and your departure. Compare luggage storage, day-bath hours and station access in Beppu and Yufuin.

Checked: September 28, 2026

The most reliable route forms a short loop: hotel, luggage storage, bath, the same storage point, then your departure platform or bus stop. A bath that looks close on a map can become a poor choice if it sends you across town and back for your suitcase.

Departure areaA sensible last bathWhy it worksMain constraint
Beppu StationKaimonji, Furo-onsen or TakegawaraSeveral municipal baths sit within walking distance of the stationCheck each bath’s cleaning break and closing day
Kagoshima-ChuoMyoban-no-YuAbout a four-minute walk from the station’s west exitOpens at 8 a.m. and has no fixed closing day
Takeo-OnsenTakeo Onsen MotoyuA bathhouse visit can fit a deliberate two- or three-hour stopAllow roughly 10–15 minutes to walk between the station and Romon gate
Ureshino-OnsenSiebold-no-YuLuggage storage is available near the shinkansen stationThe station and the old onsen district are separate
YufuinYufuin SansuikanAbout an eight-minute walk from Yufuin StationIts day-use window is in the afternoon, and the luggage service closes earlier

Locker access and opening hours can change. Check the station or operator’s latest information for the service you plan to use on your travel date.

Count five parts of the stop

Allow time to leave your bags, walk to the bath, change and bathe, return for your bags, and get to the platform or bus bay. Even when a bath is only five minutes from the station, a 30-minute soak can easily become a 90-minute stop. Add extra time if you are travelling with children, need to wash or dry long hair, have bulky luggage, or want to buy food before boarding.

Ordinary public baths are usually easier to fit than a sand bath with a queue, a private bath that depends on an open slot, or an out-of-town facility that needs a taxi. The goal on departure day is a plan you can shorten without losing your train.

Beppu: the easiest place to keep the loop compact

JR Beppu Station lists coin lockers, and several municipal baths are within the station’s walking area. Kaimonji Onsen is about a five-minute walk away; it is listed as open 6:30 a.m.–10:30 p.m., with adult admission at ¥250. Furo-onsen has similar listed hours and admission. Either is a more predictable choice for a roughly 90-minute gap than a bath with a longer, less flexible process.

With two or three hours, Takegawara Onsen’s regular bath is another option. The city lists it at ¥300, open 6:30 a.m.–10:30 p.m. The sand bath opens later, from 8 a.m., and may involve a wait or an early end to reception when busy. If the departure is close, choose the regular bath instead. See the Takegawara Onsen guide or the Beppu Station municipal-bath guide for the distinctions.

Kagoshima-Chuo: a short walk to a natural-spring bath

Myoban-no-Yu is near the west exit of Kagoshima-Chuo Station, about a four-minute walk according to the prefectural public-bath association. The association lists it as open 8 a.m.–10 p.m. with no fixed closing day. JR Kagoshima-Chuo Station lists coin lockers, so the route can stay on one side of the city: leave the suitcase at the station, walk to the bath, then return.

The facility reopened in December 2025 after rebuilding and drilling a new source. Its ordinary public bath is simpler to time than a reserved family bath. Do not infer tattoo or private-bath rules from its classification as a public bath; ask the facility if either matters to you.

Takeo: worthwhile when you leave a proper transfer window

JR Takeo-Onsen Station lists coin lockers. Takeo Onsen Motoyu is near the Romon gate, roughly a 10–15-minute walk from the station.

The tourism association lists hours of 6:30 a.m.–11:45 p.m., last reception at 11 p.m., and adult admission of ¥500.

This works best when you intentionally leave two or three hours between trains. It is not a safe last-minute dash: the walk, changing and return to the platform all count. The Takeo tourism association says visitors with tattoos are not admitted, so do not treat Motoyu as a fallback if that rule affects you.

Ureshino: store bags near the shinkansen station, then account for the extra leg

The Maruku Eyes luggage service beside Ureshino-Onsen Station offers a way to leave bags near the shinkansen. Siebold-no-Yu, however, is in the older hot-spring district, so this is not a station-to-bath walk like Beppu or Kagoshima. The city lists the public bath at 6 a.m.–10 p.m., with last reception at 9:30 p.m.; adult admission is ¥450. Use the local connection both ways and leave enough time to return to the station before boarding.

If you have around two and a half to four hours, the detour may work. With less time, stay near the station rather than gambling on a tight connection. The Ureshino day-use guide covers the area’s other bathing options.

Yufuin: convenient luggage handling, but check the bath window first

Yufuin’s Chikki luggage service can hold bags, and Sansuikan is about an eight-minute walk from the station. Its day-use bath is listed for 1–4 p.m. That makes it a fit for a departure day with a deliberately planned afternoon gap, not a universal answer for an early train or evening bus. The luggage service has its own closing time; check that schedule and make sure you can collect your bags before it closes.

When to skip the final bath

Skip it if the last usable locker or luggage counter closes before you return, the only available bath requires a connection you cannot miss, or the visit leaves no time to reach the platform. A bath is not worth turning a relaxed checkout into a sprint. If the timing is close, take a shower at your accommodation or leave the onsen for another day.
