Goshikiyu in Shiinamachi: A Dark, Wood-Lined Sento with Outdoor Resting Space

Near Shiinamachi, redesigned Goshikiyu has hot and mid-temperature baths, saunas, a cold plunge and outdoor seating. Entry is ¥600; sauna costs extra.

Goshikiyu’s redesign keeps traces of an older Tokyo bathhouse in view: a painted wall, a vintage massage chair and an old-fashioned kettle-style hair dryer sit alongside dark tile, timber and tatami. The bathhouse began in 1952 and reopened after a major rebuild in 2022. Its appeal is the contrast between that familiar sento character and a more considered sauna-and-bath layout.

Baths first, sauna if you want it

ItemDetail
Adult bath¥600
Sauna add-on¥400
Towel set / face towel¥100 / ¥50
Mid-temperature bathAround 38°C
Hot bathAround 43°C; about one metre deep at its deepest point

Take care stepping into the deeper hot bath.

Both sides have a sauna, cold bath and outdoor-air rest area. Published sauna settings are about 100°C on the men’s side and 90°C on the women’s; the cold bath is around 16°C. Water comes from a well more than 100 metres underground: groundwater, not a natural hot spring.

Plan around the last entry

From Monday to Friday, Goshikiyu opens at 4 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday opening is 3 p.m. Wednesday is its regular closing day. The bath’s last entry is 11:30 p.m., while sauna entry closes at 11 p.m. Shiinamachi Station on the Seibu Ikebukuro Line is about a three-minute walk; Mejiro Station is roughly ten minutes away.

The bathing and sauna rooms are not large, and busy periods can mean a wait, particularly for the men’s sauna. Locker rentals are available for runners and cyclists, and a coin laundry is on site. For a full-size suitcase, check with the front desk rather than assuming it will fit in a locker. The house rules distinguish between tattoo categories; because those terms can be interpreted differently, contact the bathhouse before visiting if you have any tattoo.

Goshikiyu suits a short detour from Ikebukuro or Mejiro if you want a sento with proper sauna facilities but prefer a neighbourhood setting to a large spa. For a related bath two minutes from Shiinamachi Station, see Myohoyu; first-time visitors can also use the Tokyo sento guide.
