Yufuin Hoteiya in Autumn: Which Room and Bath Should You Book?

Most Hoteiya rooms have a private bath, but Lavender and Kokonoe do not. Compare room types with the outdoor public bath and two free private-use baths.

Checked: September 27, 2026 Hoteiya’s 13 rooms are not interchangeable. Most have a private bath, but the main-house rooms Lavender and Kokonoe do not. Those guests can still use the outdoor public bath and two private-use baths at no extra charge. The choice for an autumn visit is less “onsen room or no onsen” than how much time you expect to spend bathing at the inn.

A room bath is most useful when you plan to stay in

Hoteiya’s room page groups the baths into three practical types: no in-room bath, an open-air bath, or an open-air bath plus an indoor bath. The last setup can be useful on a cold or rainy evening, when you may not want to use an exposed tub. The Yufu room, for example, has an open-air bath and a Mount Yufu view, but it is on the second floor of a two-unit building rather than a completely detached cottage. Asagiri’s covered rock bath is another weather-friendly choice.

If you will be out around town most of the day and only want one private soak, Lavender or Kokonoe may be enough. Hotei-no-Yu is indoors and Yufudake-no-Yu is the more open, view-facing option; each is free for a 40-minute session and used when vacant. Neither can be counted on for a particular dinner-time slot. A room bath gives you more control over when to bathe, not a different guarantee about the autumn leaves.

The inn describes its spring as a simple hot spring. It does not publish a fixed temperature for every tub, so do not use the “high-temperature spring” label as a stand-in for the water temperature at the point of bathing.

Lake Kinrinko is close enough for an early walk

Hoteiya lists Lake Kinrinko at about eight minutes on foot, Yunotsubo Street at about five, and Yufuin Station at roughly 21 minutes. The lake is a natural fit for an early-morning visit, when it is quieter than in the middle of the day. Autumn colour varies from year to year; the inn’s garden and the lakeside may not peak on the same dates, so avoid booking on the assumption that one particular weekend will be at full colour.

There is a free station pickup, but the inn asks guests to contact it when they reach the station or bus center; this is not a scheduled shuttle with fixed departure times. Confirm the current procedure after booking, especially if you are travelling with large bags or arriving late.

Dinner is another part of the room decision. Hoteiya offers plans with seasonal creative cuisine and a breakfast plate; compare the meal plan along with the bath type and cancellation terms rather than judging the room price alone.
