Yufuin’s Public Baths: Otomaru, Shitanyu and Quaage Compared
Compare three Yufuin public baths by location, bathing style, fees and hours—from Otomaru near the station to mixed-bathing Shitanyu by Lake Kinrinko.

Otomaru is the simple station-area choice
Yufu City describes Otomaru as the public bath closest to Yufuin Station. Adult admission is ¥300, collected in the offering box. It opens from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and closes on the third Thursday of each month. The city’s current page lists a straightforward gender-separated indoor bath, with no outdoor or private-use bath.
That makes it handy before a train or after a late arrival, provided it is not the monthly closing day. Friends or couples enter separate baths and meet afterward. If you want to share one pool, this is not the place.
Shitanyu has the lake setting, with a real privacy trade-off
Shitanyu is a small mixed-gender community bath beside Lake Kinrinko, about a 20-minute walk from Yufuin Station. It has indoor and outdoor pools, but the outdoor bath is exposed to views from the lakeside path. Treat it as a traditional shared bath, not a couples’ private outdoor onsen.
The opening time is not consistent across current listings: Oita’s official tourism page says 10 a.m.–10 p.m. with no regular closing day, while a local hotel’s sightseeing page lists 10 a.m.–9 p.m. That one-hour difference matters if you plan to arrive late. Check locally on the day rather than relying on the later closing time. The official tourism listing does not publish an admission fee; a ¥300 estimate appears elsewhere, but confirm the sign or payment box at the bath.
Quaage is for swimwear bathing or a separate outdoor bath
Quaage combines a gender-separated public bath with a swimsuit zone. The latter includes exercise bathing, a jet bath, a cascading shower and a cold bath. The swimwear area lets mixed-gender companions stay together, but it remains a shared public space. It is not a private-use pool.
The city currently lists 10 a.m.–9 p.m., last reception at 8:30 p.m., and weekly Thursday closures.
Bath-only admission is ¥520 for adults and children; the swimsuit zone plus baths is ¥830 for adults and ¥620 for children from primary school through junior high. A holiday may affect the closure day, so check the city or facility notice around a long weekend. The listed fee is a snapshot, not a promise that rates will remain unchanged.
