Nihon no Ashitaba in Autumn: Choose the Cottage Before You Book
Compare Nihon no Ashitaba’s 13 cottages by private-use baths and in-room tubs; choose a room based on how much time you plan to spend at the inn.

The first question at Nihon no Ashitaba is not “which room is the best?” It is “do you need a bath inside the cottage?” The 13 detached buildings vary widely in size, layout and bathing facilities. The shared baths are all for private use, which means a cottage without its own tub can still work for guests who simply do not want to bathe with strangers.
Pick a cottage by its actual bath setup
The current room list includes cottages with an indoor bath, a semi-open-air bath, an outdoor bath, or a combination. Several—including the Western-style cottage, Kan and Sairai—do not list a private room bath. Confirm the exact cottage name and facilities on the booking page; “detached cottage” alone does not promise an in-room onsen.
The shared circuit is the common feature: a large outdoor bath with a Mount Yufu view, a smaller bath in the bamboo grove, and six differently styled baths in the Shōwa bath area. The inn describes its baths as private-use. If a certain bath or time is important to you, ask how access works for your dates rather than assuming a specific booking system or unlimited availability.
Autumn suits the property’s setting, but not every bath has the same outlook. The large outdoor bath is the one the inn highlights for the mountain, morning light and mist. Oita Prefecture lists Mount Yufu’s typical foliage window as late October to mid-November. That is a usual range, not a forecast for the cottage grounds on your night.
This is a place to settle in
The inn sits outside the busiest part of Yufuin, on a roughly 4,500-tsubo property with old houses, woods and 13 separate cottages. It is not the most convenient base for walking back and forth to Yunotsubo Street or Lake Kinrinko. If you arrive without a car, arrange the station transfer first: the inn’s notice describes advance booking and scheduled pickup times. Reconfirm the current service before travel, since the posted notice may not reflect every date or operational change.
Breakfast and dinner are served in the dining building, not in each cottage. The grounds are part of the stay, but that also means more walking between your room, meals and baths. Guests who need step-free access should check the route for their exact cottage with the inn before booking.
The water is classified as a simple hot spring, including a weakly alkaline simple spring. The public bath page does not publish a complete source analysis or the treatment details for each bath. “Private-use” describes who shares a bathing session; it does not by itself tell you whether the water is diluted, heated or circulated.
