Keio Takaosan Onsen Gokurakuyu: A Bath After the Mount Takao Hike

Keio Takaosan Gokurakuyu sits by Takaosanguchi Station, handy after a Mount Takao hike. Entry is ¥1,100 weekdays or ¥1,300 on busy dates; tattoos are banned.

The best reason to visit Keio Takaosan Onsen Gokurakuyu is simple: the bathhouse sits next to Takaosanguchi Station, so you can finish a Mount Takao hike, collect your things and head straight in. A trip just for the hot spring can still work if you are already on the Keio Line, but it is a long detour from much of east Tokyo.

The natural spring is in the outdoor rock baths

Gokurakuyu’s source is a natural alkaline simple hot spring drawn from about 1,000 metres below ground. The source temperature is 26.2°C. The natural water is used in the outdoor rock baths, which have a milder and a hotter option. Other facilities include a microbubble bath, changing seasonal bath, artificial carbonated stone bath, far-infrared sauna and cold bath. The carbonated bath is a separate feature, not the natural spring.

AdmissionWeekdayWeekend / holiday / peak date
Adult¥1,100¥1,300
Child, age 4 through elementary school¥550¥650
Child age 3 and underFreeFree

The facility specifically includes the autumn foliage season among peak periods, but does not publish every seasonal date far in advance. Towels are not included; bath towels can be rented.

Keep bags and the clock in mind

The bathhouse opens from 8 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.; last admission is 9:45 p.m. It is open year-round without a regular weekly closing day, but inspection work or disruptions can cause temporary closure. Check the official notice before making a special trip.

There is no pre-entry luggage storage, including at the front desk. Use the coin lockers around the station before hiking; the bathhouse has lockers for valuables, not a luggage-check service. You may leave the bath area and return during the same visit, but once you leave the facility you cannot re-enter on the same ticket.

The tattoo policy is strict: tattoos, fashion tattoos and tattoo stickers are all grounds for refusal, regardless of size, and covering them does not make entry possible. Children must bathe with an adult; opposite-sex bathing is restricted from age seven, and height can also affect the rule for younger children. Ask the facility before setting out if you are travelling with a small child.

For hikers, the station-side location is the point: no bus transfer, no extra walk back into town. On sunny weekends and in foliage season, expect more visitors and a higher peak-period admission fee. If you are going only for the onsen, compare the journey from your hotel against other Tokyo day-use hot springs. The Tokyo sento and onsen guide explains the difference between a natural spring and a treated bath.
