Hagi Honjin Day-Use Onsen: Prices, Bath Rotation and Visiting Hours

Plan Hagi Honjin’s day bath around its changing entry prices, two rotating bathing areas, reservation-only private bath and weekend restrictions.

Summary: Hagi Honjin’s day bath is an unusually varied inn facility: its garden-centered Yu-no-Maru has 14 bathing styles across two areas. The price depends on when you enter, and weekend visitors cannot use the 15:00–18:00 lodging-only window. Check the date’s notice before travelling; day-use access can be suspended when the inn is busy or during maintenance.

The final reception is 20:00 for the evening window. The inn defines children as ages three through elementary school. Face towels are included; bath towels rent for ¥330. Special dates include year-end/New Year, Golden Week and Obon, and the inn may post additional date-specific notices. Silver Week rates on September 19–23, 2026 were ¥2,500 for adults and ¥1,250 for children; those dates have passed. Check current rates, closures and day-use announcements before leaving.

What is inside Yu-no-Maru?

The two bathing areas sit around a garden walkway and rotate between men and women. The official schedule currently lists Tsubaki-no-Yu for men from 13:00 and women the following morning, with Momiji-no-Yu on the opposite rotation. Visitors get one side during a visit, not all 14 styles at once.

Depending on the side, the rooms include indoor and outdoor baths, a 120-centimetre-deep standing bath, a shallow walking bath, jet and bubble baths, reclining or seated pools, a foot-rest area, and a sauna. The cold bath is supplied with spring water at around 29°C. These are different ways to use the facility, not 14 separate hot springs. The inn also says its hot water is heated, circulated and filtered, and treated with chlorine-based chemicals.

The two sides have their own character. Tsubaki-no-Yu includes an automatic löyly sauna; Momiji-no-Yu has a dry sauna listed at about 90°C. The gender assignment changes between the afternoon/evening and morning, so a day visitor only gets the side assigned to their gender during that session. The 14-style count describes the combined facility, not a route one day guest can complete in a single visit.

The spring is classified as calcium-sodium chloride. The inn’s history records a 47°C discharge when drilling reached the source in 1995; this is a historical drilling figure, not a current source analysis. The inn does not list fixed temperatures for each main bath.

The two cold baths receive continuously flowing source water at around 29°C. The public baths are heated, circulated, filtered and chlorine-treated, so the whole bathhouse should not be described as untreated source-flow.

Fit the visit around Hagi, not the other way around

The early entry window is the lowest regular day-use rate, but it overlaps with sightseeing time. Hagi Honjin is near Shōin Shrine; if you are visiting the shrine, allow enough time to reach the bath before that window ends. Weekday evenings are available at a higher rate. On weekends, day-use admission pauses for overnight guests during the afternoon break.

The inn lists irregular closure days for maintenance and says day-use admission may be refused when overnight guests make the facility busy. Don’t make this your only bathing plan on a holiday without checking the notice board or calling ahead.

Guests with tattoos may use this private bath, although tattooed visitors are not admitted to the public baths. A proper yūami garment is allowed in the public bath; swimwear and ordinary clothing are not.

Higashi-Hagi Station is about five minutes away by car. The inn lists free pickups from the station and Hagi Meirin Center between 15:00 and 18:00, but weekend day visitors cannot use the bath during the 15:00–18:00 lodging-only window. Confirm day-use eligibility for the pickup before relying on it. By car, the route from Edojo IC takes around 30 minutes and the property lists about 100 parking spaces.

Shōin Shrine and the World Heritage site Shōka Sonjuku are about a ten-minute walk away. On a weekday, a shrine visit followed by entry at 13:00 can fit the lowest-rate window; leave by 15:00 to avoid the higher weekday price. On weekends, the same window is the only early day-use option before the lodging-only break.
