Yufuin Private Outdoor Baths for a Day Trip: What You Can Actually Book

The distinction matters if you are arriving on a tight schedule or need everyone in your party to bathe together.

If you need a guaranteed time, start with Yasuha
Yasuha is the clearest fit when your itinerary depends on having a slot. Its official day-use page offers online booking for two open-air family baths. The riverside bath allows up to four people; the smaller mountain-side bath is for up to two. Both are 50-minute sessions, with a listed 15-minute extension for ¥500. There is also a gender-separated indoor bath, but it is not an outdoor option.
The booking details have changed over time: the day-use page now directs visitors to an online reservation calendar, while the FAQ still describes reception at the property. Use the calendar for the date you want, and confirm directly if it shows no bookable slots. The inn is uphill from town; its own access notes put the walk from Yufuin Station at about 25 minutes, so a taxi is the practical choice if you are on a day trip.
Two useful first-come options
At Musouen, the day-use ticket covers the baths available that day, including family baths when one is vacant. The family rooms cannot be reserved or time-slotted, so a private soak is a possibility rather than a promise. Day bathing runs only until 14:30, and individual baths have weekly cleaning days; check the official notice before setting out.
Nurukawa makes the cost of its private outdoor bath easy to understand: ¥2,600 for a 60-minute session for two.
It sits about a minute on foot from Lake Kinrinko and is listed as open until 19:00, with Tuesday and second-Wednesday closures. Its indoor private bath is a separate, cheaper option at ¥2,000 for two people for 60 minutes.
Keep Tenchi no Shizuku and Tsukahara in the right category
Tenchi no Shizuku has 13 private family-bath rooms in several tub styles. They are enclosed bathing rooms with windows, not outdoor tubs. That can be a better match in rain or cold, but it does not meet a strict “soak under the open sky” requirement. Its separate large outdoor bath is a public bath, not a private room.
Tsukahara Onsen is a different kind of detour, outside central Yufuin. Its family bath is priced separately from its public outdoor and indoor baths, and the official information does not describe it as an open-air private pool. The spring is strongly acidic (about pH 1.5); the facility advises visitors not to use soap or shampoo in the spring water. Check seasonal hours and weather closures before making the drive.
