Beppu or Yufuin? Choose the Right Oita Onsen Stay
Choose Beppu or Yufuin for a Kyushu stay by bathing, access, room budget and trip length, with car-free and airport routes compared.
Beppu and Yufuin are close enough to appear on the same Oita itinerary, but they suit different ways of travelling. Beppu works well when bathing is the main activity; Yufuin is a better fit when you want an unhurried ryokan stay, a walk through town and time around the inn.
If you have two nights, you can give each place a different role. With only one night, decide how much of the trip should go to public baths, private bathing, transport and the accommodation itself. The source details in this comparison were checked on 8 September 2026. Room rates, taxes, meal plans and cancellation terms vary; compare like-for-like options for your dates.
The short answer
Choose Beppu if you want several distinct bathing options, a lower-cost day-use itinerary or flexibility to change plans. Beppu’s eight onsen areas include city bathhouses, Kannawa’s steam-cooking district, Myoban’s hillside baths, sand baths, family baths and large hot-spring hotels. You can stay in a standard hotel and make bathing the day’s main activity.
Choose Yufuin if the inn, a slower pace and time to walk around town matter more than visiting many baths. A typical stay leaves room for a town walk before check-in, an evening bath, and another soak the next morning. A room bath or reservable private bath can make that rhythm easier to share as a couple or family.
If cost is the main constraint, Beppu usually gives you more ways to separate accommodation from bathing. If the ryokan is the centrepiece of the trip, compare specific properties in either town instead of assuming one destination is always cheaper.
| Trip priority | Usually the easier fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Several baths in one visit | Beppu | More day-use and public-bath options across different areas |
| One relaxed ryokan night | Yufuin | The stay can centre on the inn, a town walk and private time |
| Keep lodging costs separate from bathing | Beppu | You can stay outside a high-end ryokan and visit public baths |
| A private bath for two | Either | Beppu has family-bath options; Yufuin ryokan often offer reservable or in-room baths |
| No car | Either | Both can work by public transport, but the exact inn location matters |
| A one-day visit with little interest in bathing | Yufuin | Town walks, cafés and scenery can be the main activity |
This is a comparison of each place’s usual trip structure, not a claim that Yufuin lacks public baths or that Beppu lacks high-end inns. Both have exceptions; the difference is which style is easier to make the focus of a visit.
Why Beppu suits a bath-focused itinerary
Beppu’s eight onsen areas are Beppu, Hamawaki, Kankaiji, Horita, Myoban, Kannawa, Shibaseki and Kamegawa. Their facilities and surroundings differ, so “Beppu Onsen” is not one uniform bathing experience.
A day might start with a municipal bath near Beppu Station, continue to Kannawa for steam-cooked food and the Jigoku landscape, then finish at a hillside bath in Myoban. If someone in your party needs a private bath, a family-bath stop can replace one of the shared facilities. Two carefully chosen baths can provide more variety than trying to visit as many as possible.
That flexibility is useful if you would rather spend less on the room and more of the day out. You can stay at a regular hotel and choose baths individually, or book an onsen ryokan and add one public bath that offers something different from the property.
Why Yufuin suits an overnight stay
Yufuin is not best approached as a checklist of bathhouses. The town sits beneath Mount Yufu, and local tourism information describes multiple spring types in the wider area. The useful comparison is therefore at the level of the specific inn, bath and spring—not the destination name alone.
The busiest middle of the day is not necessarily the best time to experience the stay. Arrive early enough to walk around, check in with a few hours before dinner, then use the bath again the next morning if the inn’s schedule allows. That gives the same property several distinct moments without repeated transfers and changing rooms.
Day-use bathing is available at some properties, but hours and access conditions vary. Confirm the current day-use window with the inn before building a route around it. Moving between several ryokan can take time away from the slower stay that makes Yufuin appealing.
Onsen water is a facility-level decision
Neither destination has one spring type or temperature that describes every bath. Beppu’s eight areas have different sources; Yufuin also has more than one spring type. A general impression such as “Beppu is stronger” or “Yufuin is gentler” cannot tell you what a particular pool uses or how hot it will feel.
Choose the bath first, then check its published spring type, source temperature, bathing temperature and water-treatment method where available. Source-water temperature is not the same as the temperature of the pool. If heat is important to your decision, see how to read onsen water temperatures.
When you are comparing a guest-room bath with the property’s public bath, verify each separately. A ryokan may use natural spring water in its shared baths but heated fresh water in some guest-room baths. “Private,” “open-air” and “natural hot spring” describe different features and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Getting around without a car
Beppu has an advantage after arrival: the station area itself has accommodation, food and public baths, while buses connect it with areas such as Kannawa and Myoban. If weather changes or you decide not to travel farther, you still have options nearby.
Yufuin Station is close to the town’s walkable core, but ryokan locations vary. Some are near the station and main streets; others are in quieter areas with a longer walk or a transfer. Yufuin tourism information lists luggage storage and delivery services, which can help you leave bags before exploring. Check the service, hours and destination coverage before relying on it.
For a no-car trip with lots of room to change the plan, Beppu is often easier. Yufuin is still practical if you choose the inn first and organise the day around its location and transport arrangements.
Driving between Beppu and Yufuin
The short distance on a map can make repeated back-and-forth trips look tempting. Allow for the mountain road, parking and time at each stop. A one-way move is usually simpler: stay in Beppu, visit Horita or Myoban after checkout, then continue to Yufuin; or leave Yufuin after breakfast and stop in a Beppu area on the way down.
Adding Kurokawa or Aso can make the day too fragmented if you also expect to soak in every place. Choose two overnight bases rather than moving luggage between three hot-spring towns in quick succession.
Compare the stay, not the cheapest search result
Yufuin is often associated with full-service ryokan stays, while Beppu has a wider mix of business hotels, large onsen hotels and upscale inns. A platform’s lowest displayed rate does not establish which destination is less expensive: room type, meal plan, party size, taxes and cancellation conditions may differ.
Compare the same product in each place. If the room is mainly for sleeping, a Beppu hotel plus day-use baths may suit the budget. If dinner, a private bath or time on the property is part of the reason for travelling, compare ryokan at a similar level in both towns. Check whether the price includes meals, private-bath use, transfers and the hours you expect to spend at the inn.
Couples, families and older travellers
For two people who want to bathe together, do not assume a shared public bath allows mixed bathing. Look for a reservable private-use bath, a family bath or a guest room with its own bath, and confirm the booking terms for that exact facility.
Beppu offers more ways to add a private bath as a single stop without making the whole visit a ryokan stay. Yufuin makes it easier to combine private bathing with an overnight stay, dinner and a quiet morning.
With children, keep the itinerary short. A sightseeing area, several baths and a long transfer can turn into too much in one day. In Yufuin, consider pedestrian crowds, weather and luggage before choosing a room far from the station. A private-use or in-room bath may make family routines easier, but confirm the room’s actual facilities.
For an older traveller or anyone with mobility needs, ask about walking distances, stairs, handrails, temperature differences, shuttle service and the temperature of the bath they will use. “Scenic” does not mean accessible. In Beppu, choose a facility close to the transport you will use; in Yufuin, check the route from the station or ask whether the ryokan provides a transfer.
One night, two nights or more?
For a one-day visit, choose Beppu if bathing is the main event; you can focus on the city area plus Kannawa or Myoban without booking a room. Choose Yufuin if the priority is walking, food, cafés and scenery with one bath as part of the day. That is a Yufuin town visit, not the same experience as staying at a ryokan.
For two nights, spending one night in each place is often the clearest way to experience their differences. Use the Beppu night for a city bath or a visit to one onsen area, then move to Yufuin for a quieter afternoon and an overnight stay. The order can be reversed if it better fits your airport or onward train.
With three nights, bath enthusiasts may prefer two nights in Beppu and one in Yufuin. If the inn experience matters more, spend one night in Beppu and two in Yufuin—but choose different locations or purposes for the Yufuin stays rather than moving rooms without a reason. If you also want Kurokawa, make two towns your bases instead of changing hotels every night.
Before you book
- Compare the same dates, room category, number of guests, meals, taxes and cancellation terms.
- Check the exact bath and spring used by the room you plan to book.
- Confirm day-use hours and private-bath reservation rules directly with the facility.
- For a no-car stay, check the walk, shuttle or bus stop between the station and the specific inn.
- Keep enough time to use the accommodation if its bath and dinner are part of the trip’s value.
