How the town developed
Beppu’s hot springs appear in eighth-century records, including the Fudoki of Iyo and Bungo. The area became an important place for therapeutic bathing in Kyushu during the Kamakura period, and travellers arrived by land and sea in the Edo period. Drilling and transport links expanded from the Meiji era onward. Beppu’s eight hot-spring districts developed their own public baths, inns, sand baths and jigoku (hot-spring) sights, now grouped as Beppu Hatto.
